we use camp ground water for dishes and bathing, never for consumption. we use bottled water or beer for drinking.

I don't feel the need to filter pathogens out of the water system in my house, and don't feel the need in the RV either. I do sanitize the system from time to time.
Mostly, we don't drink water from the RV just because of taste, but we do use it for teeth brushing and I will drink it sometimes...making coffee, or if taking medicine at the bathroom sink.....just like at home.

I suppose that if I frequented a place with really horrible tasting water, or if it stunk for showers, I'd probably look into getting a filter at the inlet to the RV...or maybe one of those under sink filters made for residential use (for just taste)...

How long do those filters last? I heard they are expensive to replace.

Generally depends on the volume of water through the filter(s) & membrane in GALS. and the quality of the given inlet water. Lower quality inlet water, shorter filter life. The pre-filters are changed more often. An RO membrane's biggest enemy is chlorine, which breaks down the fabric. As the membrane plugs up its flow rate is reduced. If the fabric is compromised due to excess chlorine it could tear / deteriorate slightly allowing brine through, and no flow reduction. [generally measured in DP, Delta Pressure differential. The difference between inlet and outlet pressures.]

Keep in mind that RO systems bypass about as much water as they filter down the drain, referred to as brine. This is to keep the cycles of concentration lower in the filter housing up stream of the RO membrane.

Some membrane's can be back-washed to prolong life.

We use a cheaper solution. We bought a Brita pitcher with filter. Plenty enough for a pot of coffee or cooking. Water runs through filter quickly and has no taste. It could at least be a temporary fix for you. We buy a 3 pack of filters. We replace it when we go on a new trip. One easily lasts a week of constant use of five people.

I recently read an article in one of the RV forums concerning water at RV parks having serious amounts of contaminants ranging from sediment to bacteria and giardia. I have been using the Camco in-line filter but it only works to 100 microns which would be mostly sediment but nothing much else. This got me to researching all the water filters that would be acceptable for RV use.
Silt and sediment range in size from 50 to 150 microns. Other contaminants are much smaller. Bacteria range in size from 2 to 10 microns. Cysts like Giardia can be as small as .5 micron. So finding a filter that would effectively remove these contaminants was my goal. I finally decided on the Clear Source filter. https://www.clearsourcerv.com/.

IMHO: For those that say they do not drink the water, I find that brushing teeth, taking a shower will have some transfer to my mouth . Bottled water is expensive whether you refill the bottles or not. And most bottles are made so thin that they will eventually get a hole. I speak from experience!.

This solved all our problems (assuming you have power). Just plug it in at night and wake up to a gallon of pure fresh water. If you need another gallon just plug it in outside during the day as it produces both heat and some fan noise. 100% water for cheap. It costs approx 30 cents for a gallon of distilled water assuming 12 cents a megawatt/hr (which is high for most jurisdictions). Tea never tasted better.
