Razor as a TOAD

My wife and I are ‘still’ going back and forth on choosing an option for a towed vehicle. My first choice is an enclosed trailer for my Harley Ultra Limited. A 12’ trailer wouldn’t add too much length to our 38’ Challenger, and would be light and we could even use it for some added storage when needed. She’s not too keen on the bike being our only transport though.

We are also both thinking a Jeep Wrangler could be a good option. For me, it’s a great option, but she’s still unsure.

Now she’s asking me, “what about an ATV that’s street legal?”

So I know some of you use a Razor as your TOAD. From what I’m finding online, some states and even some CG’s may not allow them though.

I’d appreciate your input.

Mike

You'll need some road-worthy tires on it: the knobbies won't last a lick out on the pavement.
Pull the drive-belt off of it, and you'd be good to go!

Bob, so you’re saying it can be towed 4-down? I hadn’t even considered that, was that making of a trailer. I see now I wasn’t clear about that. But this is an unexpected twist.

How much effort in pulling the drive belt off, then putting it back on?

I’ve never seen an ATV towed 4 down. Not sure if pulling the drive belt would be enough and would it stand up to long distance highway speeds. I would check an owners manual and consult with a couple of dealers first.

Once you pull the belt: the only things spinning are the wheels and the drive-shafts...

Just a thought...

Ok, thanks. I don’t think I’m going to try 4-down, but back to the Razor as a TOAD... is it a good option? Are there issues with some states and/or some campgrounds or parks that don’t allow it?

Thanks, Mike

That's a very good question!
If it's licensed as street-legal in your Home State: it's worth investigating...
But I'm not sure if an Off-Road vehicle qualifies.
As an example: some States don't require a license plate on a small utility trailer. (Most do!)
If you're towing one through a State where they look for tags: you might want to be ready to explain the situation.

Considered this idea myself. It would be illegal on the streets of CA but that's no surprise. I remember that my relative up in Montana had off-road vehicle registration stickers on his which allowed him to drive it just about anywhere including USFS campgrounds.

Mike...we have a 10' trailer which Ron uses when we take the dresser and it can accommodate his dual sport too...he has 3 chocks set up in it. We have been considering a Razor too, but to get it street legal can be complicated, according to what we have read. In addition..if we get a Razor, the dresser stays at home ... we are seniors and find it more difficult to handle it if it gets off center, etc. We are, also, considering a Honda automatic 250 or a Yamaha Zuma ...to get around when we are parked. Thank goodness we have all winter to decide !

In addition...this summer we were in Colorado (Ouray) .. met family there...two families had Razors...trailered them in..one from NM and one from Texas...They had to trailer them from the campground to the parking lot near the beginning of the roads/trails through the mountains and passes.
