RV height

I know I should probably jump on the roof an measure it, but the spec sheet says my Chateau E31 is 12.17 feet tall. On one of my apps it says a height restriction on the route we’re going to go on of 12’ 4”. My question is, is that the roof height INCLUDING the roof vents, antenna, etc?

I think that you'd be too close for comfort; with only a two inch theoretical clearance.

That's everything...plus add 6 more inches for new asphalt, settled grounds, etc. Measure it for sure but leave room...one little bounce and boom! "recalculating"

We tend to be conservative with height restrictions. Height on our coach is listed at 13'2'., but I start getting nervous at anything under 14'. I have our GPS set at 14'. We'd rather be safe than sorry and after almost 60k miles in our 2 coaches, no ACs left on the highway!

We're only at 10'10", and I'm not sure that I'd be happy with "only" a 14' clearance...

That video!!!! Holy cow. Sure makes me really need to think more about height when traveling. My Class C says 11.2. I have a 12 foot garage door and will be measuring the door height then highest part of my RV under the doors measured height to be sure.

I added a couple of inches as a safety factor. I would still get out a eyeball if I ran into a situation that was close. Cant remember where it was but last year we at an old covered bridge. They had a posted height that was 2 inches shorter than actual. When added to my safety factor we had plenty of room. If not it would have been a 20 mile detour. My destination was 100 yards on the other side of the bridge. Thats the only close situation I've ever run into. All others have been way low or plenty of clearance.

Funny how specs change. As of this morning the 2019s are listed at 11’-0” on Thor website. Maybe they switched to lower profile air conditioners.


I’d measure it myself for sure. Have always done it when renting different RVs because what they say is usually exaggerated quite a bit.

and, whether it makes you actually feel better or not, bridge 'heights' are measured at their lowest spot, which is usually at the outside edges, where you don't drive... for example, if you look at the Blue Ridge parkway, you might be 'scared off' by some of their posted heights, yet the website will tell you plainly that it is simply the lowest point on the edge above the side of the roadway... i.e., #4 from the end near Cherokee NC, Bunches Bald, at mile post 459.3 is posted at 10' 6", yet is 18' 4" in the middle of the center of the roadway, etc... and you can already see thru the end of the other side of the tunnels as you enter....we drove the whole eastern end of the Blue Ridge parkway, where the majority of the lowest tunnels in the National Park system are located, with no problems.

It's certainly not a problem taking the conservative route, though it's probably also true that most any RV or Motorhome will pass under most any 'regular' routes that we take. While there are some exceptions, as the video shows, they are clearly marked, and warnings are clearing provided. It's really very, very rare that any RVr traveling highways and state routes encounters any situation of concern. Your GPS might tip you off to some along your route, but chances are it is using the 'lowest' height posted, not the actual height where vehicles drive thru.

Yup! They always give you the measurement taken where the bridge is closest to the ground...
It gives everybody a bit of "wiggle-room": even if we're uncomfortable with the numbers that we see.

I have read where overpasses and bridges have an inspection program of some sorts by whoever. Anyone know how often and do they measure the height? I've read the posed height is suppose to be at lowest part of overpass or bridge but IMO, according to laws of gravity, some of them I'd bet settle quite a lot over time.

All interstates follow the 16' minimum protocol unless otherwise well posted. I did run into (well not literally) a gas canopy at an interstate location that was only 12'. I found it by Google mapping and street viewing my planned route. It saved me a 9 mile back to previous exit for fuel as I prefer tanks full when closing down the day.
