I'm thinking a baby monitor might work, but mostly try to get some sound deadening under the cab's floor mats and on the firewall like Grit said.

I'm picturing something more along the lines of speakers installed with built in directional mics, or maybe the driver's unit has a hand-held mic. Were I to design it myself, with the intent of marketing it, I would make a 3 channel version with the land yachts in mind, one for midships, one for the aft quarters, and maybe even one for the loo.

I just can't believe no one has done this...
Not too bad an idea but like expand it a little for the outside too (I have an outdoor kitchen and a line for gas to a BBQ grill). Could use it for backing up to your parking square (turn this way or that). Maybe for "OK, I got the water, sewer, power lines hooked up, no trees for the antenna ...etc, beers cold? Maybe have an ALL position so everybody hears you?

Interesting thread, no doubt. I've searched these since the thread started and haven't found anything that would fit the bill better than the Cobra type handheld two-ways. They are waterproof, very portable and rechargeable. Get two sets (4 total). I have 3 sets in a "radio bag" with my stocks all programed to same channel. We use them at grocery stores, marinas, campgrounds, rest areas...pretty much anywhere within reasonable close range (1 mile +/-). Can't tell you how many time it's gone off in the grocery store with a reminder to also "add this to the list". We will actually use them over the next 10 day as we camp at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Yeah, had a pair and one broke so I got another pair about of years ago. I just wear t shirts with a pocket for carrying it when I need two hands.

4 of my six also have the "hands free" microphone and earbud. Good for public places or late night arrivals.

So...is there a solution out there? Someone MUST have thought of this! (And yes, we've tried walkie talkies, but what a pain in the butt, you gotta remember to charge them, they sound like crap, and you're actually broadcasting to the immediate surroundings.)

Is your problem from engine noise, wind noise or road noise? I am kind of surprised that you have that much noise.

Sprinter or Ford chassis?

Also thinking that if you are not using headsets than the ambient noise will still interfere with mikes and speakers in the cab and cabin.

Install a CB with a PA speaker inside. She will hear you then.

This is a Ford chassis. The problem is from road noise in the coach part. And from my bad right ear.

Someone mentioned soundproofing, but I don't know where I would put it.

Jeez, look at all the replies I missed, because SOMEONE'S FORUM SOFTWARE never sent me a notification....ahem....

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to look into that Cobra thing, with the vox activation and earbud. I just know I won't be able to get the XYL to wear it consistently, but it's worth a look.

But are you really telling me that I'm the only one with this problem?

JimSpy,

We have a 23TR and my wife and I can hold a conversation in normal tones travelling down the highways. I can see with her sitting on the couch that it could be an issue with the sound coming from behind. I don't know where you would put sound reduction material but if road noise is an issue maybe inner wheel wells in front would help silence tire noise. I understand they are a pretty easy install.

I know AZ has a lot of rubberized highway surfaces, is it a problem travelling on those highways?

Not at all. It's the rubberized highways that are the quietest!

Well that would limit your noise to tire howl which I have very little of. When I lived in AZ they were in the process of doing Superstition Hyway in rubberized asphalt. Huge differance in sound when you hit a stretch of it. It was like you lifted up off the road surface.
