So while the rig may be willing: the tires probably aren't!

Many of the light truck tires, like the 16-inch used on most Class Cs, often have an "R" speed rating which are good for up to 106 MPH (170 km/h). My old Michelins as well as my new ones are R speed rated.

I don't recommend driving any motorhome anywhere near 106 MPH just because the tires may be rated for that speed. My van is much more stable than most As or Cs and I don't cruise above 85 MPH for more than a few minutes at a time even when speed limits are very generous.

I was recently told by a service writer that there is a limiter on our E450 Axis.

Yes, my 2014 Hurricane does the exact same thing. Thx, Dennis.

I have been over 80 in Vegas, is too loud at that speed. Engine is not working hard. My Vegas is most stable above 65. Below 65 feels slightly skitish, may be something like gyroscope effect with heavy wheels.

I tow racecar on open trailer, same LT tires rated for 106. Regular trailer tires do not last and have low speed rating.

Is now almost 2 years old, will likely add 2nd a/c, he'll wig bars and sumo springs in front if we keep. Have been considering bigger RV.

When the speed limit is 70 MPH, a lot of drivers want to do close to 80 in good conditions. At posted 85 MPH, do drivers really go much faster? I don't know but some studies I've read suggest we (collectively) tend to drive at what feels right for the conditions rather than the posted limit.

In any case, what seems much more dangerous is when an old lady driving a Class C is doing 45 MPH in the middle lane of I-75 near Ocala in Florida when traffic flow was close to 80 MPH. There were so many irate drivers and she didn't even move over to right lane.

While speeding is undoubtedly unsafe, going too slow can be just as bad or worse.

I'll respectfully disagree.
Nothing is more dangerous than a driver who is "beyond their limits."

But I will admit that a lot of driver with questionable driving skills; get tripped up by speed differentials also.

Anyone who blocks over 1,000 cars (backup was over a mile long) by doing 45 MPH in the middle lane of an extremely busy interstate reached their driving limits a long time ago and shouldn't be driving at all. They need to hang it up.

Going a little slower like 60 ~ 65 MPH to save fuel is understandable, but 45 MPH is outright irresponsible, selfish, and dangerous.

I agree with Chance, that's what I was told about our previous coach. It's the speed rating of the tires.

I googled Governor on motorhome and found this quote: (link attached)

https://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/f...print/true.cfm

Hypertech-Max-Energy-Programmers wrote:

Top-Speed Limiter

Automobile manufacturers limit a vehicle's top-speed to match the speed rating of the factory-installed tires. If you have installed tires that have a different speed rating, the Max Energy allows you to raise or lower the vehicle's top-speed limiter to match the speed rating of the newly installed tires. A tire's speed rating for maximum safe speed under perfect conditions is marked on its sidewall. Always obey all traffic laws when driving and only use this feature for off-highway competition in sanctioned events

THERE WERE OTHER OPINIONS stating that the governor prevents the motor and transmission from over reving etc.

They are speed limited tires, and I also read, not sure if it's true, that Goodyear required Ford to govern the F53 in order to use their tires.

While I can easily agree with you that this was dangerous: it's just ONE example.
As someone who makes a living while helping folks settle their insurance claims: the root cause of trying to drive beyond your limits, was actually the root cause of that cluster.

The last 8yrs of my working career I drove for USF Reddaway freight lines. Our trucks had liniters set at 62 MPH! Talk about frustrating! I couldn't even pass when there was a truck/passing lane. Numerous times the slow vehicle I was trying to go by would speed up! There was no way I could get around them. Then as soon as the passing lane was gone they would slow back down to 45-50 mph again... Grrr.

I also drove for a living & 90% of those weren't past their skill limit, but just being HUGE jerks (that's putting it mildly).

Tire Blowout safety info

today...while reading forum discussions..I wandered down below to additional sites and info and found this link

RV Tire Blowout Tips And Informational Video

This is information directly from Michelin regarding what an RV (motorhome) driver should do if a blowout occurs. It is a good read.

As a new owner with our first class A, I have pushed it to 72. In calm air. And that was to get around someone who could not hold a steady speed. That said I wonder if my '01 Vette has a limiter. I have not yet pushed it that hard, past 80, but still wonder will this thing do 175 as rated? As a youngster I would have the answer by now, but being older I just wonder about these things....
