Toad in the mountains...

Last Wednesday, Trish and I hooked the Jeep up to the MH and headed for the Jeep Invasion in Pigeon Forge, TN. It was our first trip with the V-10 where we had to go over some serious mountain grades. And it will be out last.

NEVER will I do that in a V-10 again.

I've been building my Jeep for a trip to Moab, Utah next year, so I'm sure my Jeep is a little heaver than most. But wow, that V-10 didn't like those 8% grades at all. (Did real well going down the other side though... )

So while I was at the campground, I did a little Internet shopping and fixed the problem. I'll pick it up next week.

So how is the Jeep performing on the rocks?
That's a good-looking rig!

Thank you, K0LCB. Yep, mine dropped down a gear or two as well, but listening to that V-10 screaming as I inched up the mountain just wasn't for me. It might be different if I only occasionally encountered a mountain grade, but where I live I'm surrounded by mountains regardless of which way I decide to travel.

LOL, thanks SS. But for the time being, I'm still the owner of a Windsport as well, so I'm gonna be a "part time SOB"

Beautiful RV! I'd say you got more than just some extra power for going uphill. Enjoy [emoji106]

Thank you, lal22. It's a Tiffin Phaeton, 40' long with 360 Cummins diesel. It looks like new and with only 18,700 miles, it should give us great service.

Just made a round trip through the Canadian Rockies. The v10 reving at 4800 rpm over the long passes became common. The rv still moved along are 65 (no toad). When I got home I talked to and longtime rv’er who explained the v10 will rev like crazy and work like a dog without worry.

Glad to hear that it worked so well for you.
I agree: the V-10 seems to be plenty strong enough, for whatever you throw at it!

Yeah, I don't disagree with either of you. The V-10 engine is strong and worthy. But mine is an older model (5-speed transmission) and it struggles where the newer 6-speed might not.

Gears are everything.

Glad to hear the V10 is a workaholic if I need it. Because that is the engine I have in the ACE. I def see mountains in future trips where I will listen to it scream and remember what was said. Question.... when going down the mountain, to avoid breaking constantly, does anyone drive in a lower gear? How do you handle steep downhill?

I drove most of the way with the cruse control on. In cruse control the motor shifts, and I use far less brake. When I brake lightly with the cruse on the motor adjusted to the new speed without having to reset cruse. This worked well for me on the long forever declines.

The v10 comes alive around 4K some people are freaked out about the noise but it’s a workhorse engine, nothing to be concerned with.

Yup! The extra cog really makes a big difference.
You could just trade for the latest model...

I could have, but it would cost me at least $20K more for the new gas coach than I paid for the used Diesel Phaeton. Put them side-by-side and the Phaeton has soooo much more to offer.

I forget what thread it was in, but at the time I was adamant about buying older quality vs new entry level. Just no way I'm going to spend hard-earned money (or even easily earned money) on a new coach, just to spend a year sorting out nonsense that the factory could have (and should have) taken care of before it left for public consumption.

If a couch manufacture wants my money, they're going to need to earn it. And in my opinion, they're all getting a little too lax in the QC department.

Congratulations on your beautiful new rig! I have to agree with your move, made tons of sense. I don't really see Thor advertising or promoting any of their units as entry-level? As I said in my post about the Delano is it entry level everyone replied No? I wish people would quit confusing poor quality and poor workmanship and using the word entry level instead?

There are tons of entry-level products on the market that are in fact super super high quality. What we are seeing without any excuses is just downright poor craftsmanship, workmanship and leadership. That is what I was getting at in my Delano post. the Delano is not entry-level. I hope the quality is there for all who purchase. Thor should know by now after building thousands of units the quality should be getting better not worse. Wishing you safe travels and many comfortable nights in your new rig.

that's the whole story right there....want your V-10 to be quieter??? drive at pusher speed...the V-10 will pull any hill at 3000 rpms...and should net about 50-55 mph...while the pusher will slow to 38-40 mph...@ 40 mph, 4th with a 6 speed, and 3rd with a 5 speed... in 3rd or 4th, just slow down, and still pass the pushers.... sure the pushers have more torque..... but it uses it all to pull the heavy chassis up the hill..my rule of thumb for coaches has always been 30' and under....gas...over 30' go diesel...and don't buy anything on a freightshaker…. people never want to admit that their rv rides horrible...they all ride good in the camp ground...and pull grades the fastest....
