Look at Casino’s as well. They usually don’t care if you park in your lot. Gives you options for food, entertainment and they always have security.

City and county ordinances, in some areas, may prohibit overnight parking. Keep this in mind because if there are legal prohibitions against overnight parking, local police/ deputies may be waking you up in the middle of the night and telling you to move on. In such areas, whether or not the property owner or manager tells you its OK, it is still prohibited. Best to always check with management.

My experience so far is they have far more to worry about than an RVer getting a little sleep in a rest area... I don't hesitate to use a rest area to get some rest.
Worst case if they ever knocked - 'I was too tired to drive and stopped for some rest' - which would be quite true - I expect worst case they will say to move on.

I've used 'Chateau Walmart' many times - Personally I use the app in advance to see - sometimes call ahead - always go in and stop at the service desk at least to thank them for allowing us to stay - and they typically see a cart of stuff being purchased.

I haven't tried staying when the app or parking lot was posted with 'no overnight' - have seen RV's parked in those too. I'd prefer the rest area in these cases.

I agree. When you see signage forbidding the practice of overnight parking: it's best to move on.

Yeah, Oklahoma does have some overnite rest areas but they also have others designated as "picnic areas" on I 40. You can still sleep there but it has no bathroom. Other places have everything there. Some states have snack trucks parked there and others have police to keep crime down.

Yeah, long time ago when I was in the car, I wondered about that. Why would you have a picnic next to a highway, 50 miles from anything? Only maybe good thing is folks wouldn't come out that far begging for gas, food, money, down on thier luck. Don't give them anything and your vehicle might have a flat next morning or some nails in the pathway.

In 30 years of sleeping in rest areas with cars, pickups and every type camper I've never been approached. It's one of those rules for just in case they need to run someone off.

I have been sleeping/napping in rest areas since the late 70's and the only place I have been asked to leave was a rest area on I-95 in Virginia. It seems Virginia is not very friendly to motorists what with the reduced speed limits and department of revenue generation officers spaced every 19 miles on tourist thorofares. When I discovered WalMart and their tolerance for travelers I moved my overnight stops there and keep the rest areas for naps and lunch breaks.

Whenever we struck out on a trip across the East Coast's version of the "Ho Chi Minh trail": we only stopped for fuel and bathrooms. We'd usually pack enough pre-made food for whatever the duration of the trip would be,,,

Yeah good idea. Last trip I took was supposed to be about a week. Liked it so much at the 1st place it got longer. Then the next got longer, well saw something else I liked to see more of. Then went to another place... which led to another. Would have stayed except that I was running low on meds and used up my hidden box enjoying myself. Nah I don't know the cure.

You just sort of need to paste the right look on your face, and folks will know better than to bother you...

I have found just the opposite. Usually the state sets the rules for rest areas and most provide at least 8 hours but definitely frown on camping. We only extended our bedroom slide when we had a fifth wheel. Now our bedroom slide is out the rear so no problem.

We stay at rest areas, truck stops and camp grounds. What ever we find convenient at the time. Our last trip of nine states we stayed exclusively at KOA’s. This year hard to tell. I have avoided WM because I don’t trust the areas.

I'm not prejudiced; Truck stops like T/A and Flying J can be good places to lay over if you are fuelling. Some Wal-Mart's are excellent, some will chase you away. Interstate highway rest areas can be dangerous, but more so if you are in a car or truck. If you are not sleeping in plain view in a car or walking around rest areas can be ok. As long as you don't put your slides out, most authorities would rather you get some rest. There are several good smartphone apps to get info from.
It's very important to gather information before you go blundering about. In most places, ignorance is not an excuse.

I have a small sticker near each outside door knob that says..."Warning, Poisonous Reptiles Inside". So far...no door knockers!

Well, I have a small window to the right of the door to look out, an open blade knife in my back pocket, keep the screen door closed and I make sure they don't come inside to my level, watch thier hands and eyes and I dont show them my wallet. Since they can't see inside I act like there is another person with me inside the RV. I figure if I give something, they won't slash a tire. Course, yes I do carry but I'd rather not have to use it cause of everything afterward. Endless paperwork, interviews, calls, memorys, court. Ehh, $4-5 dollars & go to sleep.
