Wind

Traveling west on I-10 from Palm Springs after a few fun days in Desert Hot Springs should have checked the local weather report. 30 mph winds with gusts to 50+. We stopped at a rest stop to wait out the wind. I was getting blown around on the freeway so decided to stop and wait. I'm retired and don't have to be anywhere in a hurry.

... 30 mph winds with gusts to 50+....

Around here that's called :
Three out of seven days, any week of the year.

It takes a bit to get used to it. But I'd pull over if possible and practical because the pullover impromptu sandwich and nap... Is one of the best things in life.

Aside:
There is/was an ill refuted steering damper that had an adjustment letting you set it to the prevailing wind. I am still interested in such, but I think you'd be chasing that 'right-left switch about 30 times a minute.

Anyone have 3xperience with that damper?

It's always better to pull over and wait it out; than it is to try and push on through to a REAL problem!

I have driven my former 41 foot bus through winds in excess of 80MPH. Not much fun, and very slow going.

Sounds awful, the 30+ wasn't bad. The guests at 50+ were a drag. When the guests were predicted at 75+ it was time to stop and wait it out.

I've done it too. North Palm Springs on the I-10 when we first got the 2016 Axis. Pushed from the slow to the middle lane without my permission driving 45 mph.

I’m with you. We do not drive in any rain, really windy days, snow or even night. Some people have a hard time driving period. I’m not going to give them another excuse to cut me off or try to stop short. I like you am retired, so I’m in now hurry. I also try to travel from 10-3, as most people work during those times.

You might have a damper but the guy next to you who might hit you may not.

I had a Saf T Plus steering stabilizer added to my ‘16 Vegas. Definitely helps in wind and when being passed my trucks. I’d still opt for the rest stop/early stop option though if I had the time. If I’m not having fun driving, it takes awhile to settle down when I stop for the day.

Aren't they usually full of hot air... and constantly causing gusts?

Wind

I have had the same problem on that stretch of highway. Do not recall the wind speed, but I know it exceeded the 25 mph I was going. The wind was unfurling the slide awnings as well. At one point I had to get off on a wide spot, lower the levelers, put out a slide, climb up on top, unroll the awning by hand to relieve slack where the awning had attempted unsuccessfully to rewind itself.
Got to the exit headed to Joshua Tree (our destination) and the wind just quit.

That section of the I-10 is frequently windy.
We've been blown around just about every time we travel through, sometimes worse than others. Coming back from Sedona had a mirror knocked off by some travel trailer pushed into me. Fortunately just the mirror no other damage.

This is why I always carry extra underwear in the RV. There's not much in this world that scares me but driving the 24.1 in wind, especially while towing is one of those rare instances ...

Take a look at a Blue Ox Tru Center. I have one on my Outlaw and love it. Works great. Had it on my ACE before the Outlaw and have had no problems with it on either.

Windy

My wife and I were driving on I-5 through Weed, Ca. I don't know what the wind speed was but I was having a hard time keeping our rig in one lane.

Anyway, I heard a loud flapping noise and asked my wife to look out her window and see what was causing it. The awning had unwound and was flapping like crazy.

I pulled off at the next exit, which happened to be at the Weed airport but unfortunately, it was after hours on Sunday and no one was around at the FBO.

I pulled up under an overpass to block the wind and carefully pulled the awning arms out to roll up the canvas. Some after that, I bought a secondary awning lock to keep the roller from unwinding.

RV awning travel lock.
