I guess I’m off to a great start then.....recently picked up my brand new coach and on the walk through, the tankless hot water system didn’t even work. Had to hang around for a few hours while their techs fixed whatever the problem was. I inquired about what the problem turned out to be, but no one had an answer for me.

My coach came with an owners manual for a tank hot water heater, NOT one for a tankless. I contacted Gerard directly, and got one from them. At least in their manual, there are a number of things the owner can do to try and troubleshoot a problem on their own, if so inclined. I want to be one of those kind of owners! lol

Interesting that they would not tell you what the problem was. They were probably embarrassed that the switch on the outside was not turned on...

If it WAS that simple, and they told you about it: they might have trouble getting THOR to pay for a couple of hours worth of labor...

For those that have changed back to a tank heater, what brand and cost did you go with? I have a Four Winds 24 Sprinter. I just got comfortable with the tankless when I went winter camping. Barely got luke warm water with the cold tank down to the upper 30s. The tankless just won’t heat water that is too cold. Too much frustration and water use for someone that boondocks all the time.

Perhaps you could try insulating the hot water lines coming back into the coach from the tankless system.
That should reduce the chance of the water cooling off on that return trip...

I found for my tankless to work best if connect to city water turn on the pump to need the extra pressure

There was something that needed to be fixed or adjusted, as we have used ours down to about 30 degrees with no problems. I really like that you just never run out of hot water.

Thanks Laco, the difference is you are on a water supply with endless water, I only have 30 gal. Water from a connection is also warmer, likely above the 45 degrees the manual notes as the limit for getting hot water.

Smile

I was kind of skeptical with the On Demand Water Heater and really thought about going back to old school water heater with storage tank. Two issues:
1. The waste of running water and how much faster my tanks will fill.
2. Sometimes I could not get hot water regardless how long it ran.
My wife ask me to live with it. So for now I use an Camco 40058 RV Adjustable Water Pressure Regulator find the minimum pressure required for the water heater to work. I have always used the standard 40 psi regulator in the past, but I find that my On Demand Water Heater with 45 - 50 psi. I'm happy for now.

We use our propane only tankless hot water like this...
~ for showers we set thermostat to 109 (+/-) degrees and only use the hot valve on the shower. That is, no need to use the cold valve. As long as there’s constant flow, the water is hot & comfortable. We can always adjust the thermostat up or down as needed for the next time
~ for the sink...we crank the thermostat higher, even to highest setting, but only use the hot water valve on the faucet

Bottom line...it’s not like home

Our new rig has Truma's instant hot water system installed. I'll be sure to report in how it works: once the 2019 Season arrives.

One reason I went with the Thor vs. the Dynamax was Thor had the old fashioned water heater. There;s lots of drama managing water supply in a camper with a tankless system. I was shocked to find all new Super C's now come with tankless. I think it's a cost savings issue for them instead of a "better idea". Tankless at home is great...tankless for boondocking will double your water usage. Some say to adjust the hot side to your "bath temperature" and only use hot water faucet when showering. I like HOT water for dish washing and the wife likes HOT water for showering. I'm not a fan of super hot water for shower. Tankless would be to much drama for me.

I always thought tankless was a good idea for RVs: You get as much hot water as you need, no more, no less and there may be a savings on propane.

I'm sure there is some growing pains like there is with everything new. From what I've been reading/seeing on the internet I think the Class B's with the Truma one have been at it a bit longer than the one Thor's been using in all of its new coaches which means its probably a bit more mature implementation.

Had similar concern about water temp during cold weather. Found post on Thor forum that to increase temp typically due to colder weather, you can slow the flow of water thru the heating element by adjusting the white control valve on the back of the unit. Here is a link for the manual

Please ket us know if this works for you.

Hey Gritz!
No matter what sort of hot water system you've got: isn't it better than washing your hair in the toilet?

I mean: all that flushing has got to be pretty tough on your hearing!
