After D.C.
Thanks to everyone with your suggestions for DC. I have the route and campgrounds going to DC set. We are still planning on what to do there but we have a good idea of what that will be. We also have Gettysburg and Philly (Independence Hall) set.
We are not doing any sight seeing on our way there. Driving there we will be caravanning with friends and they are limited with vacation time. For them this trip will probably be three weeks.
After Philly will separate from our friends. We plan to head south and take our time coming home.
So now we are looking for suggestions for areas to visit south. Carolinas, Virginas, Tennessee, anything and everything. Neither Maria nor I have ever been in the southern states
We would like to see Nashville, and Amarillo to camp with Dino for a weekend. Other than that we are open to anything.
SO for those of you living in the south or have been there suggest away. Ill research your suggestions and hopefully maybe meet some of you during the trip
Really appreciate all the help
Jerry

Heading south, I would hit Assateague Island in Maryland, then cross the bridge tunnel into Virginia. Head a bit North to Williamsburg/Yorktown/ Jamestown. Then head south to Kitty Hawk. Then head West to Ashville NC. Then over to Pigeon Forge/ Gatlinburg TN then head to Nashville. These are some of our favorite places. Although we've never hit them all in one trip. Each of these areas has so much to see and do.

Only thing I can mention here is that the Nashville KOA is pretty nice (only about 3 miles from the Grand Ole Opry), and don't forget to visit the Nashville Parthenon!

The South is where it's happening!!! There as so many beautiful places to see. As your travels unfold, let us know what areas you are in and where you are headed. I'll toss in things in those areas that you wouldn't want to miss. One example is "Cades Cove"! Just south of Gatlinburg on Hwy 441 as you travel over and through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, headed into Cherokee, NC. Winding road with switchbacks but not a challenge for MH's...there's a CG there also.
cades cove - Great Smoky Mountains National Park
We'll "see you" along your route. Share pics/notes about your travels. We are heading out this year for extended traveling. I continue to add cool places to the wall map of things to do and see.

If you do go to Asheville, there is the Biltmore Estate to see built by the railroad tycoon.
Leaving Asheville, you could do the Blue Ridge Parkway going south, nice scenic drive.
Or, take US74 south to Cherokee, NC, to the casinos, and campgrounds. (I-40 is out of the way to Gatlinburg)
Once in Cherokee, go through the Great Smoky Mountains taking you into Gatlinburg.
Somewhere in between there is Maggie Valley, NC on US19.
The Wheels Through Time museum is a popular destination if you like motorcycles.
This would be a lot of mountain driving, the RV will make it all, more fun by motorcycle or sports car though.
74 is more sweeping and straight on the way through.
Beware of the Tail of the Dragon - US 129, between Robbinsville, NC and Maryville, TN. (Pronounced: mair-a-vul)
The RV & Toad will not make it through there and big trucks are banned from it.
Very tight switchback curves upon one another, 318 curves in 11 miles.
Of course, there is even more to see if you want to get into the northern Georgia mountains, like Helen, and or Dahlonega (pronounced dah-lah-nah-gah).
Or Stone Mountain outside of Atlanta.

Well Maria just gave me our route home. After Philly we are heading down to Kentucky to visit her cousins. Dont know what city they live in. After that Nashville, Memphis, got to visit the King, Amarillo to visit Dino, Albuquerque to visit my son, then home.
There will be stops along the way. I like to drive around 6 hours a day
Was planning on 5 or 6 weeks for this trip but Maria will be cleared to go back to work by then and she does the coverage for vacations.
I have to research the route and cg along the way. Fun planning the trip

If you are talking about the Flinstone, Bed Rock park in Amarillo. I think it was just sold and it is closed for work and expansion to include a raptor park.
If you like to see cool, interesting and corky things check out these sites

The Wilson football and whistle tour was amazing.

Mammoth Cave might be an interesting option for you on that route.
Your're route will in part be copying what we took a couple summers ago out to the canyon. We took a similar approach... drive medium/longish days with a stop almost every day to at least one museum or other significant activity. We parking lot boon docked a lot enroute, but I found that I'd need to stop at a CG every 2-3 nights to get better sleep.
From what I saw in Amarillo I'm not so sure I'd make that a must-do stop. If your route takes you through there though (I suppose going to ABQ it does) there's an RV dealership there that has a pretty good RV museum. Parking is a bit trick but if you plan ahead by looking at maps you'll be better prepared. If I were going again I'd maybe park at the nearby walmart and walk.
Oh, the Big Texan Steakhouse is a touristy trap but fun
Also for camping in that area. Palo Duro Canyon. We wish we'd known to make reservations there. They were full for us but we drove through and took a little hike. We would just about go back just for that place alone.
Or there's a nice travel information center/rest area just near the airport that would make a great overnight stop probably
We enjoyed ABQ very much.
OK City - The Bricktown Canal River Walk area is nice. Park at/near the Bass Pro. Also the bombing memorial there
I enjoyed using Roadtrippers.com to find points of interest options.
and Allstays to find places to park enroute.

Great info. I like to stay at campgrounds even if its just for a night. Safer and more comfortable
We are most likey staying at the oasis cg in Amarillo. The only reason we are stopping there is to visit Dino and his clan. Probably wont do anythibg there except relax, eat and lots of bsing with friends

If you're going to Mammoth Caves you have to stop by Cave City to take some pics of the Wigwam Village motel (Google) there (yeah of course if you already have pics of the one in AZ or CA then...meh).
Of course we did LOL
