Homolovi Ruins State Park
If you geek out on ancient American history like I do, you're going to immerse yourself in this place.
There is a campground there. It's located in Winslow AZ, about a good 2-3 miles off I-40. No, you cannot hear the interstate but you may catch a train whistle or two.
The Homolovi are Hopi Indian predecessors. They migrated to and fro from the Winslow area to the upper Mesas located north of Winslow.
I was basically alone to explore the ruins. After everyone else left, I stayed and continued to explore the lesser explored trails. All trails are marked.
The last pic is a pano show the extreme expanse of the east wall of Holomovi II
You can say what you want about this but, as I stood in the east plaza of Holomovi II, I could almost here the chants over the passing winds. A crow passed over, circled and settled on a rock. I tried to snap a pic but he'd already taken flight.
As I was leaving, I approached the two mounds where, again a crow landed. Again it took flight as I raised my camera.
The campground is nice. There are no sewer hookups. Most sites have electric and water. Some of the tent sites only have water.
If you're in the area and geek out on stuff like this, you should make the stop. It's going to take me a while to sort and organize the pics but I attached some money shots for your pleasure.
