Went there last summer, drove from Central Illinois. Awesome ,didn't want to leave. No electricity, but your camping on the beach. Run generator during the day. Wild horses running around on beach. U won't regret it, especially at nite.

In addition to the Federal campground, there is also a State campground on Assateague Island.
Info can be found at https://dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands...ssateague.aspx

You can take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel from Norfolk to the pennisula that Asateague island is on. Chincoteague island is there also. It is beautiful. After your trip, I would seriously NOT cross the old rickety Chesapeake bridge that takes you to
Baltimore. It is the most frightening bridge I have ever driven my RV across. It scared the shit out of me. After your vacation at Assateague, I would just go back south and use the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel back to Norfolk.

Popular place and you'll need to plan months in advance for reservations. There's a Federal and a State CG. Both are primarily dry sites. Water is available at various places though. Quiet times are 10PM to 7AM or so. Campsites are over the dune from the Ocean and you'll be maybe 20 minutes from Ocean City.
And the horses. Well they own the place and roam freely doing what horses do best.

If you're referring to the US 50 bridge near the south end of OC, yes it is a drawbridge. 18 wheelers use it all the time with no problem. From Ocean City, you'd head west on 50 about 1.5 miles to MD 611 and follow the signs to Assateague.

Looks and sound very nice but our two dogs would probably drive us (and other campers) nuts barking at all the horses around there.

When u get to ocean City ( I highly recommend ) don't bother trying to use the private parking lots that are available. A guy tried to charge me $ 60.00. a day. He said that's what every one charges. I went to City owned parking lot w 24' gemini. First lot next to beginning of boardwalk next to beach. Cost $ 8.00 for all day. Also, only service dogs allowed on boardwalk . U need certified papers for service. They are allowed on side streets. While there try the crab at one of the many awesome restaurant s. Both the iland and OC are on our list to go back to. U Won't regret it.

We went there and I would go again. My dog fell in love with horses and just sat and watched. I was impressed with beach there . It was large and no big buildings in sight. Ocean city easier when you can just drive in .

Assateague is a great place. The problem is if the winds are from the bay side watch out for the horse flies they take you and your coach away. We had one bad year out of5 years or so. Maryland does have hot water showers while the federal park does not. At least last time I looked not hot water in federal shower houses
