Mississippi River Roads

Searched and couldn't find any posts. Has anyone traveled?

I see roads on both east and west side.
One better site seeing then the other? Or better shape?

Going to cross river at Dyersburg TN on I155 and head south to New Orleans on whichever side folks success.

Thx, Dennis.

Watch for trees...they grow wildly around the rivers and DOT may not maintain the height as much as they do on "truck type routes".

Not much of the river to see south of I-155 except the big tows. The best viewing is along the River Road, IL-3 between Caro and Alton. IL, all thought, the river is much smaller without the Ohio river water. If you want to watch the biggest tows try to navigate the narrowest part of the lower river Columbus-Belmont SP, KY is a great spot with a nice campground (it is an old Confederate river fort on a 100 ft bluff above the river). There is a great ferry running between Dorena, MO and Hickman, KY. The upper river near DuChien to Prescott has great river, lake views.

The Mississippi River Delta along Hwy 61 is pretty flat, but there is a lot of history. Clarksdale, MS has a rich tradition of Blues Music, Black American Cultural history and many small museums along the way.
South of Clarksdale you can pick up Hwy 1 along the river. You will have to seek some small roads to get over to Hwy 1. Take your time, BBQ, Blues and The Delta will infuse your soul.
When you get to Hwy 20, veer a bit east and travel some of the Nachez Trace. Beautiful, scenic, lonely. Stop at The Nachez Trace Museum in Clinton. A pretty little stop.
South of Nachez in St.Francisville, LA check out Magnolia Cafe for lunch or seek a haunted plantation. If you use Google and ask locals, you will have an adventure!

If your talking about "The Great River Road" check the web site. We enjoyed it the time we did it but some of the routing is along county roads. Get the map and watch your signage very closely. There are plenty sights to see and many ACOE CG's along the route. We did the east side since we were returning to FL from WI.

I've driven Mississippi highway 1 from Vicksburg and crossed the river at Helena, Arkansas. Its a good 2 lane road without much traffic. Have to go through some small towns. A nice drive. Although it runs along the river, you cant really see the river from the highway.
