The Big Loop

After a quick trip to Bellevue Wa, next week, we load up in Sunriver Or. and head for the East coast.

Oregon to Colorado, to Michigan, shortcut through Canada, Pennsylvania, DC, then down the coast to Florida.
After a while there, across the southern coast to TX, over to Arizona, Nevada, Eastern CA and Back home.

8348 Miles
63 nights
$2379.25 for Fuel.

Our longest RV trip ever by a wide margin. we are excited!

Sounds like a great trip.

So what was your AVG MPG on this trip? How much did you use the generator?

We haven't taken the trip yet. We are planning on 10 mpg.

Oh, Ok, I misunderstood. I though you just came back from your big trip.

Right now (summertime) we run the Generator pretty much all day long (when its above like 82 deg) to keep the RV cool (and the wife happy). So I see 7.5 to 8.5 MPG in my Axis.

It dont help I tend to cruse at 72+ mph either.

I like to think if I can keep it around 68 with no Genny I would get 10.

Plus they say its not "fully broken in" until 10K and I just turned over 8K on the odometer. Perahps I will see .5 more MPG when broken in fully? Who knows.

I realize that this isn’t an MPG discussion...
But I’d like to see Whirnot’s running avg/total as his trip progresses.
That’s why I asked him to keep us posted along the way.

For me? I’m boring, averaging 60mph on the highway, rarely exceeding 65mph, and only occasionally running generator to keep the rear cool until stopped and boon-docked.
Falling below 10 MPG is rare for me, usually in the range of 10.5-11 MPG.
(My other car is a Prius, so I’m used to subdued driving)

Yeah I have a hard time driving below the speed limits. I will start out at 68 mph but with hills and traffic I end up creeping north of 70 every time. And I accelerate like im in a sedan (when its safe). I dont let it rev above 3K RPM's (if I can help it) in any given gear..... so its not like im hot roding.

Since im not retired I always feel like im in a rush to get to where I need to go. Perhaps when I retire I will feel more relaxed? Who knows.

I turned off the Genny for an hour on our way back home last weekend but it was like 88 deg outside and humid. The Dash AC just dont cut it for us. I guess we could try a curtain to trap the cold air but we like the open feel of the RV.

I think if we go on a long trip I might try an curtain (or sheet) to see how it goes. Most of our trips are weekend only and within 300 miles of home so it dont seem worth it.

Most of the time the Genny is running. We feel more relaxed in the cool air.

We found if we run the dash AC with it set for the ducts in the face of the dash directed right at us, it is more comfortable and we rarely use the Genny on the road. I will be tracking mileage and will keep you posted.

And yes, after you retire, it is easier to slow down.

OK...mind you I have never been a soft right pedal kinda guy since I love to blast through twisties and also drag race. But, when driving the huge "loafa' bread" I try not to "cruise" above 65-68 mph. I just feel like it's a more comfortable cruising speed that keeps my wife less tense and maybe, MAYBE, saves a tiny thimble of fuel.
BTW, does anyone use a https://www.scangauge.com/ . I bought it for our old MH because it didn't have a tachometer. Now, I use to monitor a bunch of other functions, but also mph. It shows a speed roughly 3-4 mph slower than the speedometer. So, I bump my speed up to the speed I really want using the scangauge.

Our recent 6500 mile trip (32 ft class A) used 913 gallons of gas that cost $2,900. But it included some time in California where gas was $4.50/gallon. It costs what it costs. Have fun!

Well, we head out today. Our plan is to try not to drive more than 4 hours per day. We have our complete route planned and inputted into an app called RV parky. It helps us find camp and RV spots, and has contact info. Looks good so far.

We are planning gas stops a maximum of 450 miles apart, so even 8.5 miles per gallon will get us there. We are using gas buddy for fuel planning and it really helps save. The good news is gas is down some, we may be as much as .40 per gal under initial budget.

The bad news is temperatures are looking to be in the high 90s for the next few days. And our first stop is a hot springs?

We are also using the Roadside America website to find some obscure and unusual places to visit.
Yes, we are obviously anal when it comes to planning. Head em up! Move em out!

Have a great trip and have fun

On my recent 6000 mile trip I fueled up every time at the end of the days drive. About 30 miles from the camp site I'd look for a gas station to fill up using gas buddy

It was nice to alway have a fuel tank when starting a drive. I get 600+ miles per tank but always filled at half tank on longer drives

I already found one place that I can save over 20 cents per gallon by stopping 100 miles earlier. Then it matches up with my next stop that is 25 cents cheaper than 100 mile further.

We started filling up at days end also. My navigator (DW) would start searching best prices before hand. It gets the day off to an easy start.

Unfortunately, many stations limit you to $100 or sometimes $125. I usually fill up twice a day or use two card if I stop at the end of a day. I’ve called both BP and Mastercard and both say it’s a station policy and not a card limit. Perhaps my new Flying J will avoid this limit but I’ve noticed that they usually charge more than other stations.
