Exclamation Camping at Lake Superior…..how bad are the bugs this time of year?

The family and I are taking our camping up to Munising Tourist Park Campground on Lake Superior….close to Pictured Rock State Park.

Has anyone camped up around that area during this time of year? Some of the reviews I’ve seen online say that the bugs can get really bad……I’m just trying to figure out how “Bad” that really is. Do we just need to stock up on bug spray, or is it so bad that we need to invest in some bug suits?

Any info would be great!!

We didn’t camp there last year but we did ride the Spyder through the eastern half of the UP..... including Pictured Rock. Mosquitoes were brutal this time last year.

If you ventured onto trails to hike through the woods it was really brutal. My wife and sister-in-law started heading down a trail towards the water. I got a few feet and said forget it. They kept going and turned around because it got so bad.

Later when I opened the trunk on the Spyder, some mosquitoes flew out!

We went up to Whitefish Point and it got bad there as well. We bought some local bug repellant and it helped.

Some places were worse than others but I’m glad we stayed in a hotel!

It’s much better snowmobiling there in the winter when there are no bugs!

When the mosquitoes get large enough that they talk about measuring the distance between their eyeballs: you know that you're in for trouble!

Don't forget about the black flies as well.

We've been up there in early August without any issues. I'd wait a bit.

I use one of these just before dark...spray the grass and all shrubs/bushes in the immediate area. NO BUGS of any type for hours!! Make sure your neighbors know what you're doing and offer to spray their area too. I make my own juice mixing pyrethrin and diesel fuel...much cheaper and better than the pre-mix they offer. It makes lots of fog so be careful where you use it. It could sterilize every kid at the pool if the wind is blowing the wrong way.

(This bottle of Pyrethrin is the only sample bottle I could find online and it's a mix. I actually purchased straight Pyrethtin from a chemical insecticide distributor. I mix a couple ounces to a gallon of diesel.)

We just got back from camping up in Huron National Forest. The mosquitoes were a hassle but the ticks were horrendous. Don't go without DEET and without long sleeves and with tucking pants in socks.
