shocked lol

We live in Western NC and our first outing was to the KOA in Murphy NC. Nice stay great place. We thought we would give the KOA at Cherokee a try. I have driven thru it and it was nice. What a shock. Murphy $37.50 full hook up a night. Cherokee over $70.00. I asked the guy at Murphy and he said because they were a corporate site. Won't be staying at one of those lol. Hell I can get a cheap hotel for that price.

Dumb question, how can you tell which ones are corporate sites?

Was a Great thread on KOA. I just could not find it, talked about the 3 kinds of KOA Parks. KOA Journeys, KOA Holidays and KOA Resorts. KOA Resorts is the Fancy one. Interesting as I never knew of the 3 classes of KOA Campgrounds.

The 3 classes of KOA campgrounds is only a few years old (maybe 5 now). Its a relatively new distinction.

Have experienced 2 KOAs and was not impressed at all with either. One is no longer even in business. I know they revamped their levels a few years back as mentioned. We have some long trips planned this year, and I have reservations at a few KOAs along the way. Hopefully the research I did will pay off. I have spoken to people at a couple. Hearing a voice who knows information helped ease some concerns, too.

The KOA near my house is over $100 a night during peak time. It is less than a mile from the golf of Mexico and is very nice

yes, thats a small nice Koa in Murphy, and now there’s another brand new option just back toward town - an RV Resort, with pool, clubhouse, some sites on ‘water’, and all cement pads - drawback(?): not a single shade tree!

Did you not call ahead to reserve a sight and find out how much? $$ is all about location location and time of year. Plus if you stay weekly or monthly you would save. I would get Passport America and Good Sams club. These are the best clubs to join.

I'd recommend staying at Happy Holiday park in Cherokee rather than the KOA. Happy Holiday's rate is $49 a night and Good Sam gets you 10% off that. It's close to the casino and the bingo hall there. It's a nice park for the money. The KOA is nice but it's quite a ways from town and more secluded but the price is a little steep for that area. We go to Cherokee from the Gatlinburg area where we live 2-3 times a month to play bingo for the weekend.

On a side note, once a month they have "Super Saturday" where the final jackpot coverall prize is $35,000 guaranteed! Cost is $75 per book which gives you 12 cards per game and they play 14 games.

Not just KOA...with the onset of record RV sales and more people getting out on the street, CG's are finding themselves booked most of the time. Many are raising their rates (supply and demand) because they can get it. They will start a menu of services too...you pay for the site and find up-charges for 50A, dual A/C's and sewer, etc. It won't be long that RV traveling will be close to hotel costs. Say good-bye to those $17 sites.

I'm curious if location / proximity to attractions was a variable in the OP's price comparison.

Definitely. I lived in Western NC/North GA area for years. Cherokee pricing can vary greatly depending on time of year.

Lots of parks on the West coast are $70.00 + per night. I guess I have become de-sensitized to it over the years. Hotels you won't find for less than double that, starting.

blw2...no doubt! The closer you get to where you want to be...the more it cost you...just like when you starting dating your wife. Cherokee is a huge tourist attraction.

Looking forward to prices to increase substantially on weekends. Tough finding a site for a week or 2 when weekends are booked and empty through the week. $125 a night for weekends sounds fair.

I agree...
We need to convert a bunch of Golf Courses into RV parks!

I live in SC and yes, I have experienced the same at both of these KOAs. Having visited many casinos while traveling throughout USA, I have found anything around Cherokee is more expensive than any where else. Why? I do not know. They are not RV friendly at all.
