Illegal to bring your own firewood???

Question for the more senior traveled RV'ers:

This past weekend we were at a KOA Campground in NC and on the day I checked out I was waiting my turn and just looking around the office and saw a small sign posted that said it was Illegal to bring your own firewood to the campground. Is that just some strange NC law or does it really exist elsewhere??

depends on the state and in many cases the counties there is a bettle that playing hob with trees this is an attempt to control it. Though some high end camp grounds will have this in place so you will have to buy their wood.

It exists in Michigan to the extent you're not suppose to even move firewood within the state because of the Emerald Ash Borer. This non-native species is responsible for wiping out millions of trees within the state. In order to prevent the spread of this Ohio also prohibits you from bringing your own firewood into the state. So, yes this is real and the penalty can be anywhere from a couple of hundred of bucks to a couple of thousand.

Been quite some time since we've been to a park that even allowed wood burning fires, propane pits allowed.

Interesting,

I know almost every State has different laws for concealed permits and firearms and there are websites and apps for that kind of information.

Does anyone know if there is a website or app for firewood rules? I have only camped in NC, SC, and Ga and so far wood burning firepits were still available and allowed....also I have only seen the one sign regarding bring your own firewood.

There is a list of states on the Emerald Ash Borer information page. If you click on the state name it takes you to the relevant legal code:
Emerald Ash Borer

Doc,

Don't know of an app that provides the info but when we make campground reservations I always look online at the campground rules. If outside firewood is restricted it will generally be in the rules for the park.

The same restriction applies at a lot of campgrounds in the mountain areas of SW Virginia.

Yup! Same thing in New York. The Emerald Ash Bore issue. You can only move firewood around the same county.

This is pretty common, they do not want you to bring in pests. Every campground in AZ and CA I have visited has had this rule.

I been to a few but they were the really big ones with forest and lots of trees. They don't want you to bring in your own wood because of bugs and pest that could by in your wood. Not knowing where you got your wood from they don't want you bugs that could eat, kill and destroy their trees and forest. One place in East Texas, a state park even gave out wood for free...

I don't know about other states, but all VA State Parks have signs posted about firewood.

In the west, mid-west & Canada.... the big concern is the pine beetle, has destroyed millions of acres of pine forests

Simple truth about firewood today: Don't move it between states. Not anymore. Spare the extra weight in your rig. You don't want creepy crawlies from firewood feasting on the wood inside your RV, anyway.

Purchasing wood at the campground helps support the campground, and somebody that cut and stacked it. Use it up or leave any you can't use. We have been the recipient of wood that folks left at our site. Most of the wood we have purchased has been well cured and ready to burn.

You are probably OK with local camping outings, or within your region or state.
