Best route MD to Hatterus, NC

Looking for the best route with a 37' MH and toad. Looking at Rt 17 thru Virginia and the into nc continuing on Rt 17. My only concern is the bridges and tunnel new Hampton roads va. Has anyone travel the route or did they find a way around the tunnel.

Once you get to Norfolk there is only 1 way: 158 and that takes a while.

You are fine with the tunnels, just be ready to pull into the DOT station prior to entering to show that your propane is turned off. Be ready for a lot of beach traffic if your going on the weekend or summer months around Virginia Beach area.

When you get off I-64 in Chesapeake VA, you actually take Rt 168, there is a toll rd called Chesapeake expressway that will save you 10 miles but toll rates double during summer months may to sept. If you don’t want to pay toll, the regular route is good, I drive it with my 32 ft RV with no problem, roads merge at end of toll road to continue to outer banks...good luck & enjoy your trip...

If you want to avoid the tunnel, take I-95 South to I-295 South around Richmond and then take US-460 East at the Hopewell exit. US-460 East will take you to the I-664/I-64 interchange and then head south over the bridge on I-64 and the US-17 exit will be past the bridge a couple of exits down. You can also take the Chesapeake Expressway (RT 168 mentioned above) as well.

Thanks to all for your help. I think I'll take the route suggested around Richmond and avoid tunnels.

Be advised, if you have never traveled Rt 460 before with your trailer, it can be kinda stressful, the road is a 4 lane undivided Hwy,2 east , 2 west with no lane separation, would recommend staying in right lane, left lane can be tight with a truck coming in opposite lane ....just take your time and watch your speed thru the towns....

It it's a question of just trying to get there: you've always got I-95 in your hip pocket...
Otherwise: these guys have found you some really nice Routes...

I used to live in Va Beach and have a Hurricane 35C. Rt 460 isn't terrible but there are some stretches where the roadway is paved across and oncoming lanes are just across the yellow line. It also goes through some towns where the speed limit goes down as low as 25. I never felt stressed about taking this route.

The good news is that it isn't that well traveled until you get closer to Hampton Roads and then it is a separated highway. It is also the only way (coming from the north) to avoid having to shut off your propane to go through a tunnel.
