Michigan Upper Peninsula in August

We're leaving the heat of Florida for the Upper Peninsula August 1st, planning to get back around Labor Day. Besides Mackinac Island does anyone have some suggestions? We will be staying in Straits State Park planning to do hiking, cycling and exploring many things Yooper.
This will be our longest trip in our Axis 25.2 and first time out of the southeast in a long time. Toad will be our CR=V with two bikes on the back of it. Looking forward to a great trip. Any hints of what to see and do while there? We'll have our passports if any ideas include Canada.

The Soo Locks, The Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point, Tahquamenon Falls, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Houghton, Quincy Mine, Porcupine Mountains, Copper Harbor, The Mystery Spot, The Paulding Lights.

Tons of stuff (I had a longer post with web links but then Chrome killed that tab...GRRR!)

And close by are the Apostle Islands, just drift over to northern Wisconsin. Like Jamie said, the Sault St. Marie (Soo) locks were a "gotta see"

Take plenty of insect repellent, the last time we were there Michigan's state bird (the mosquito) were as big as hummingbirds & thirsty.
The list above is a good trip.

If you spend time in Saulte Ste Marie Michigan I'd recommend getting reservations at Aune Ausborn on the river. You can watch the big ships go by the campground. There is the boat tour that takes you through the SOO Locks and the canadian lock. There is also the Valley Camp ship museum that is pretty cool. And if you are into Casinos there is Kewadin.

Oh yeah and depending on the time of year... black flies can be a nuisance.

Looks as if we'll be busy. I made the mistake(?) of reservations at Straits SP for the entire time and day tripping from there. Would have been better off to move from park to park. Guess I'll change my plan a bit. Also lots of bug spray on hand.

If you'll be anywhere near Houghton this is a great place to stay:
City of Houghton - RV Park

Its not big but you can walk to downtown Houghton (and you're smack dab in the middle of the Keweenaw peninsula).

Late July into early August the bugs aren't that bad--at least the last few years we've been up there.

Here is an article on the "bug season" in the UP:

Day tripping the UP! It's 300 mile long with tons of things to do. The tourist traps are great but there is superb outdoor activities. Tell us your interests. I lived in the Sault 38 years.

We are in UP today! 61* now in Baraga, MI! Planning to do the Painted Rocks boat tour midday Friday, then on to Sault for just one night. Will be staying by the river where we will watch the ships.

Would love to linger, but we have a lot of miles to cover ahtrip. Agree Houghton was great, on a previous trip.

Be sure to get to the western part if you've got the time. You won't believe you're in Michigan. Tons of waterfalls, hiking trails, etc. Lake of the Clouds is a must see. And the top of Brockway Mountain Drive in Copper Harbor. Breath taking beauty.

I didn't realize the distances involved. We may cut our stay at Straits SP and wander north and west. We're interested in bike trails, hiking trails, the beauty rewarded by leaving the road and visiting sites requiring some effort to get to. Definitely not shoppers but interested in food that is unique to areas visited. The Soo locks and watching ships sounds fun. Reminds me of being in New Orleans, looking up and seeing a freighter way above you. Lots of history to learn while wandering.

I'm on the road now. It's Thursday, so am in Kentucky, overnighting in Mammoth Cave NP. Watching mom and baby deer feed. Peace and quiet, beautiful weather. Cicadas. Sunset. Can this moment be dozen in time?
