Mt. Rushmore/South Dakota

Hi All!

We just booked a trip to see Mt Rushmore and all the surrounding attractions. I have wanted to see Mt. Rushmore since I was a little girl! So I'm pretty excited.

This will be our second trip in the motorhome (Windi). The first was to our home state of Florida. And, we can dewinterize!

Good for you ! We have been to the area several times...
Tatanka is another interesting sight in the area.
Custer State Park where over 1000 buffalo roam in free range.

Crazy Horse Monument is interesting, particularly if you enjoy seeing projects during construction. The bus/trolley ride up to the work site is worth it to get up close. Unfortunately it's been a very slow process -- I didn't notice much difference between two visits over a decade apart.

regarding what Chance says...Crazy Horse...we first viewed it in 1980...since then we have looked at it from the road...
Rock formation...Eye of the Needle..
Also, Devils Tower is best viewed from a distance..
If you go north to Tatanka...might take in Sturgis...not crazy busy when Bike Week isn't on....

Suggest you go to Mt Rushmore about an hour before the evening program, that gives you time to walk underneath the faces, view the artist studio and gift shop before sundown.

When we were there last summer, we also did Custer Pk, Mammoth Site, Reptile Gardens, the steam train, Crazy Horse from the highway and Rapid City and Hill City. All good. Previous trips took us to Deadwood, The Journey Museum, Borglum Museum, Devils Tower. All good, too.

A must for us in that area is Spearfish Canyon. Don't miss it!

The night lighting is pretty awesome at Mt Rushmore. I was honored to lower and fold the flag during the 2007 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally while they honored veterans on-stage.

There is a nice little RV park and Cabin Rental place just a couple miles from Keystone, on the Hill City Road. I believe it is called Kemps Camp.
we stayed there and liked it, great location and the steam train goes right by there.

We're headed that way too.

We'll be at the Happy Holiday campgrounds from May 22nd to the 26th. South Dakota is the only state I've never been to. We're looking forward to it.

Mt Rushmore Evening Program

You have to take in the evening lighting program the rangers present as they bring up the lights on Mt. Rushmore.

You won't forget it.

We will be in Spearfish attending the Trike rally in Deadwood for a week in July. Rushmore was on our list of places to see for sure. Pretty excited since we have never been to S. Dakota.

That must have been an awesome experience. Last trip to Sturgis for me was 2000 for the 60th anniversary. God bless our troops and veterans.

The last time we visited they were still doing the 4th of July fireworks off the Rushmore heads. That was an interesting sight to see--especially when a small fire broke out up there.
