Road trip to niagra falls

Thinking of going to niagra falls for the weekend. Want to go over to the Canadian side. Are they very strict about your food and beverages you have inside the camper?
Thanks, AJ

AJ, be careful if you are going on the Canadian side with pets. There are very specific rules that pertain to pets and I won't take out dogs across the border.

We go to Canada every labor day and thus cross the border twice. It is far easier to get into Canada than it is returning home LOL.

So far we've never had any issues crossing the border with any food and they've never asked.

Typically going into Canada the main questions are:
  • "What are you bringing with you?" our answer usually: "Just what we need"
  • License Plate?"
  • "Any guns?" "nope" -- guns are illegal in Canada
  • "Where are you going?" "Spending the weekend at XXX"

Returning to the US:
  • "Where were you?" "spent the weekend at XXX"
  • "License Plate?"
  • "When did you enter canada?" "Last Thursday"
  • "Main residence?"
  • "Did you purchase anything in Canada?" "Nothing other than some food we ate"

Note that I believe the border's communicate (e.g. when going into Canada they ask you for your license plate and scan in all your passports that information gets communicated to the US so when you return and they ask you when you crossed over be honest! LOL).

We rally with some folks (two coaches) that went into Canada earlier this year. Both women bought a sack of potatoes each. One left the potatoes in the original packaging no problems here. The one that took the potatoes out of the packaging and placed them in a veggie basket had them confiscated by US Customs.

As to pets. I have taken dogs into Canada without issue. All you have to do is have your vet certify that all vaccinations are up to date and provide a health certificate.

Is there an expiration for the health certificate? I know when I flew my dogs from Germany to the US I had to have a health cert within 10 days of travel.

RV in Canada

Just drove through Canada twice with RV in last week... Crossing in Port Huron/Sarnia and Niagara Falls on my way to/from an event in NY...
Each time was asked about pets - so certainly have your papers for them (mine was home for this trip...)

I was just 'passing through' - and I have Nexus (pre-screened traveler)- so was just 4 or 5 questions from Canadian customs... US side boarded the RV each time to look around.

US asked about any fruits... Canada asked about guns...
I had alcohol (wine, beer, liquor) but wasn't going to be consumed or left in Canada... (Canada asked...)
I had limited food on board (shopped in NY after passing through)
Here is a link on what food you can bring (some restrictions on original packaging - labeling - country of origin available):
What Can I Bring Into Canada in Terms Of Food, Plant, Animal and Related Products? - Food - Canadian Food Inspection Agency

Don't know if you will be staying in Canada - or for how long - just be aware of what you can bring back with you and limits on quantity based on time in Canada - especially if you are shopping duty free...

Just came back from Canada and US Customs asked if I had the registration for the vehicle. Did he think something bad? Nice looking Axis 24.1!

Oh yeah I completely forgot about that. Upon returning to the US this year our questions went like:
  • Where did you go in Canada?
  • Say that is a really nice rig!
  • That is the perfect size.
  • What kind of mpg do you get?
  • Move along
LOL

We are still Canadian citizens living in Ohio so it is kind of the opposite for us.

Only full size rifles and shotguns are allowed to cross into Canada. And you must buy a permit for them. The agent will inspect them.
