Koa

We just returned from the Avila Pismo KOA here in California - it was just okay. KOA is more expensive than some RV parks and definitely more than state or national forest campgrounds but they are also more secure and offer more amenities (laundry facilities, paved parking etc). That said, it's okay for a week long vacation but if we were to travel cross country like we hope to when we retire, we would definitely have to find less expensive accommodations.

I would like to hear from those of you that have traveled more than two weeks and what your thoughts are on where to stay, how long to stay, etc. I'm thinking 2-3 nights would be the most in a cross country trip.

Depends...
When I'm traveling cross country for a purpose (4 to 6 days traveling each way with "set in stone arrival times for business/meetings/family) I normally do not use "campgrounds". rather I use truckstops/Wally-Worlds/ road side wide spots and such for little to no cost.

If we are taking our time traveling with no "set in stone" destination arrival times, will seek out Casino, COE, County or City sponsored camp sites..Our last jaunt was for 21 days/1100 miles and we spent a total of $225 out of pocket for lodging .(dry camped 5 nights)
Note..
Our 40' with tag, coach is fully usable with the single slide retracted and carry 112 gal fresh /115 gal gray and 60 gal black. so extended stay (no solar, but equipped with a diesel 12k genny and I use it) dry camping is a non issue.
I "dumped" the tanks once "en-route" and when we returned home.

YRMV
Happy Trails to You!
