Spearfish South Dakota
We have been camped at Elkhorn Ridge RV Park/Campground all week. If you haven't been to this area it is a must see. We have found better scenery and more interesting places within 100 miles of here than all or most of our travels out west this summer. This area of the Black Hills of course is where Sturgis is, but there is much more here. Mount Rushmore was a wonderful 80 miles drive from the CG. The Needles Highway, Custer State Park, on and on.
A couple weeks ago we spent a day on our motorcycle in Yellowstone. Never seen a animal. Yesterday we spent part of a day in Custer State Park and at one point could have almost touched a Bison. We were very close to two different herds of Bison, saw numerous Elk, and other wildlife. The scenery in this park rivals Yellowstone and some would argue it is better with the narrow tunnels through the rock formations and such.
Any adventure out west should include this part of South Dakota. We are already planning what year we will be returning!

We'e originally from FL and now live in NC. 3 years ago we went to the area you're talking about and were in awe the entire time. That area, glacier park and Yellowstone are as good as it gets.

I really think the next time we will stay 2 weeks. Devil's Tower, Spearfish Canyon, Mount Rushmore, Needles Highway, Custer Park, and everything else just can't be enjoyed enough in a week. Yesterday afternoon we had went to Rapid City and then Deadwood for a late lunch in one of their old saloons. Walking to where the Harley was parked downtown a gunfight was just starting in the middle of Main Street (reenactment). Coming out of Deadwood we had to almost stop because of several Big Horn sheep coming down the face of a mountain onto the roadway. It was amazing to watch!

And if you like that try the AlCan highway to Alaska and see Denali NP and the Keani peninsula. It's awesome too. Glacier was always our favorites before our trips to Alaska and it still is one of our favorite places to camp for a week or two - especially Many Glacier on the east side near the Canadian border.

Yep. During our 4 month trip, I liked Glacier the most, DW liked Yellowstone. Soo many people mention an Alaska trip as you have. gotta get it on the calendar.

Another vote for Devils Tower - my brother talked me into climbing it with him (scared the #### out of me) but it's an amazing place.

The AlCan Hiway is on our list ! and doing southern Canada east to Nova Scotia and down through New England.
We, have been to South Dakota several times...for those of you who enjoy the Bison ... be sure to visit in September when they do the roundup ! It is amazing ! If you plan on attending, parking is at a premium..we rode the motorcycle in and had no problem.
I got some amazing photos of Bison !
In addition...when in the Deadwood/Sturgis area go to TaTanka the tribute to Bison and Native Americans. Catch a preview on the website !

It was good meeting you guys Pat. We are dragging out feet this morning getting ready to pull out because we just hate to move on down the road! Safe travels to you, maybe we will land at the same CG again.

Gloria, I initially did the CHF (cheap handling fix) and it helped a little with the sway and roll. However, about 1/4 of the way into our trip I ordered the Sumos and had them installed while in Illinois. It has made a huge difference when traveling through 15-20mph cross winds.

Joe-
You mentioned Spearfish Canyon earlier, one of our favorite places! We were in that area again last summer, and had major hail damage to our little towed car in Custer Park. It's a long, sad story, but it turned out for the better!

I've been to Sturgis a few times for the rally . I always liked staying at Custer State park and riding from there. Last time out we were riding the loop and a herd of buffalo crossed the road and stopped traffic . As we were sitting there on the bike all of a sudden the guy behind me lurched forward up onto the grass and slammed on the brakes. I get ready to ask him WTF and my girlfriend says, " I think that big buffalo was going to get us" I look over his hood and there is a buffalo head the size of a small car staring at us. I was much grateful that area is beautiful. It's better to go before or after the rally unless you want to see the insanity and get the T-shirt .

Enjoyed your post ... We have encountered buffalo at Custer and Yellowstone while on the bike. Our last trip to Custer was for the Roundup. An awesome sight.
