What's Your Favorite RV & Motorhome Friendly Cities in North America?

I'm always interested in hearing about cities or communities that seem to cater to the RV traveler. Where are they and what are the attractions you found?

Our NFL Tour...
We love tailgating at NFL games and I'd have to say with over 12 stadiums under our belts Lambeau Field Green Bay is at the top of my list for friendliest RV city. What would you expect from a stadium that is positioned in a tiny community built around football with such a rich history. As far as NFL RV destinations Detroit absolutely rests at the bottom of our list. Not only was the facilities completely unprepared for RVers but several of the fans around the stadium at game day are down right rude. Next on our hit list is Heinz Field, and from what I hear it's excellent for tailgating, we'll see if they RV friendly. Let me know if you have any suggestions for Pittsburgh.

I hope that you find great tailgating at Heinz field but would carefully investigate first..

I used to live in downtown Pittsburgh and the stadium was notoriously tough to park at. That said, you may find some good info here and it looks like there's some party planning going on there as well

The single best place I've ever found to park an RV in a city or town was in Port Townsend WA where they had RV hookups right on the pier downtown. You could watch the harbour traffic from your window and walk to town 1 block away.

Thanks for the link, I'll be researching it for the next season this fall.

Washington & Oregon would have to be on in my top 7 states I want to hit over the next 7 years. But with 2 young ones I'm saving the cross-country 2 weeks vacations for when they are a bit older.

Let me know when you are ready to come visit the huge Dallas Cowboy Stadium:

I'd be glad to show you around when you are in town!

I have not been down to Dallas since 1995 and 1996... Texas sure does loves their Cowboys... How's the RV tailing at the new stadium?

My DW and I toured the Cowboy's stadium while Explore USA was getting our RW36FL ready. What a great facility that place is... I've been to Ford Field id Detroit and the "Factory of Sadness", Cleveland Browns Stadium. Neither of them compare to Cowboy's stadium. We've never RVed at an NFL game but have often thought about trying it at a nascar race.
Thanks for the topic.

To be honest, I am not sure. I know Jerry wanted to design a stadium where tailgating would be a big part of the experience but I think his focus was on the auto tailgaters. I haven't been to RV lot, so I can't comment on that.

Full disclosure: Although I am born and raised in Dallas, I am on hiatus as a Cowboy fan. I was a big Tom Landry fan growing up, he was a classy guy. Jerry sent him packing in a not so admirable way. At least he got a great coach in (Jimmy Johnson) who did an amazing job but then Jerry started meddling and pushed him away. This has been his track record with all his coaches. He gets a team builder (Jimmy Johnson or Bill Parcells) and then they get frustrated with his meddling and he puts in a shill. Even some shills won super bowls on the back of the work of their predecessors. If he can win a Super Bowl (or even do decent in post season) with one of his shills (like Jason Garret who he has now) then I'll give him the respect he deserves. Until then I credit him for building a beautiful stadium and increasing the value of the franchise, his main goal.

JBork, not sure if you've made it to a Bills game yet in good ol' Orchard Park, NY, but the tailgating experience there is an amazing one. They have a lot dedicated to RV usage. Of course there aren't any water or electrical connections, you're on your own there, but the use of space is excellent.

I only warn that if the game you plan on attending is on a Sunday, you need to be parked Friday night. It gets packed....even more so when they're winning.

Not sure about football destinations but Charlotte NC is good for Nascar. They have multiple areas right around the track with hook ups. There is also a lot of places to eat near there. Lots of neat nascar stuff to do in the area too.... one of the best nascar things is the michael waltrip race shop. I forget the cost to get in but they tour you through where the pit crew practices and where the cars are built (as in standing not far from the machines and a few feet from the cars). We even got to see the inside of the haulers. It was pretty cool. THere is also the nascar hall of fame down there. We didn't stay at any of the places near the track because we weren't there for a race and we wanted a place with a playground. If you have kids, there is a lazy 5 ranch not far away that has horse drawn wagon ride animal safaris (you can hand feed giraffes, water buffaloes, antelope etc). There is also the discovery place that is a hands on museum for kids. My 5 yr old loved this. You can get a F250 quad cab, long bed pick up (22 ft long and approx 7 ft high) in the garage but I wouldn't try anything bigger.

Gotta admit that this born and raised Dallasite finds being a Cowboy harder than ever these days. But I just can't let them go even though I HATE, HATE, HATE, the owner.

Now, back to the topic at hand. We are pretty new to this and haven't traveled much yet, so I will be keeping an eye on this thread to see what others recommend -- and will chime in about our favorites when we do travel.

We have bought the "Big Rigs Best Bets campground directory" you can get it in book form or online. Forty Nine States, Alaska Highway section and eight Canadian Provinces, places to fuel up, sites to see. Great book. The authors wrote the book after camping in them over thirteen years. Keep looking at it and deciding where to go when the time comes where we can really travel the road.

Smile Great RV Park

Clinton State Park, very near Lawrence, KS is the best I have experienced over my past 37-years of RV'ing. For NASCAR, NFL, baseball and soccer fans this park is within one hour or less driving to those great facilities and tasty Kansas City barbecue. The lake has hiking, fishing and bike trails that draw national events.

Wonderful shade trees and super manicured throughout the state park. My 2013 Redwood 36RL and 2012 Ford 350 Lariat fit into all the sites.

The site I am on this week has about 100 feet on each side to the adjacent site and a breath taking view of the lake out the rear living room window. What a view to wake to at sunrise!

Clinton State Park

Hi

You said the spot you are on now is a great one. Can you please tell me which one that is. I am keeping a book of all campsites in Canada and the US that we might come upon and it would be nice to have a specified campsite number to enter.

Enjoy your time out. We are going to be de-winterizing our unit this weekend and get it ready to go on the first camping trip of the year next weekend. Can hardly wait.

The site number is #148. Sites 146 and 150 are equally nice.

Best regards,
Bob

Looked on the web at this campsite. Looks pretty nice. Marked in the book already. Hopefully we will get down there.

Something I overlooked - three are two camping grounds at CSP. They are designated #1 & #3. The site I referenced is in #3. The correct site number is B148. It is a premium site however the cost is well worth it. There are also seven new and well equipped cabins for rent and all with a great view of the lake.

Google Earth shows CSP however does not do justice to the actual view.

GPS DATA for site B148: latitude 38.935260; longitude -95.385517. Elevation is 961 feet.

Best regards,
Bob
