We have AT&T and had solid signal from VA all of the way through WV, KY, OH, IN, IL and Iowa to Sioux Falls, SD along major highways. I can't speak to anything west from there.

We have used ATT all across the US and up into Canada and Alaska and the service is pretty good at least along the major highways. Even Yellowstone NP has some cell phone and data service. Montana seemed to be about the worst, especially for data. In the mid-west when you get outside if major cities data can go to 3G or below.

I always check with the provider to see how coverage might be at the desired locations

I think with ATT you should be in pretty good shape

https://opensignal.com/

They have a map that will give you a pretty good idea of where you'll have coverage

When the iPhones first came out, I was forced to switch to AT&T. What I discovered was that as long as you stay on the major thoroughfares and in or around big cities, you are fine with AT&T.

Now that the iPhone works on all networks I have switched back to Verizon. I find that Verizon has much better coverage in fringe areas. (e.g. boon-docking).

On the other hand, I also have bought a WeBoost RV 4G. It is an amplifier that boosts all the cellphone frequencies. It requires one to put an antenna on the outside of your RV pointing at the cell tower (There are websites for that). I have used it several times to make sure that I have a good cell signal.
