Very interesting method that TerryJames posted. When we were recently looking at a couple different makes of coaches we discovered a couple new ones already marked down almost 30%. On one of these we did some later telephone negotiations on the phone and had it down to 38% below MSRP. We didn't end up buying it because of an issue they couldn't seem to get fixed prior to delivery.
I am guessing that if a dealer has a new coach on the lot with a MSRP of $150,000, then he actually only has about $80,000 invested. Will he reduce it 30% to 40% for a sale, sure he will depending on what time of year it is, how long he has had it, and numerous other factors.
What we ended up doing was finding a 2 year old bigger unit with 3,200 miles on it. With a 5 year bumper-to-bumper full warranty included you could say it was reduced over 50% from the original MSRP.
I think the "closed bidding letter" approach could work with some dealers. I suspect some dealers would ignore it and not participate. When spending $80,000, $100,000, or even more I have to see and touch the product I am buying first.
