Axis 24.1 radiator protection

We just had our first oil change on our Axis 24.1, and the mechanic recommended some sort of protection to stop stones and other debris from hitting the radiator and another cooler and causing a leak. I noticed some protection on other types of of motorhomes. Any thoughts?

Thanks

I have been considering getting a piece of sheet aluminum and making a grille backing for my Challenger.

I am currently thinking about using something like this and mounting it to the hood mounting hardware.

Shop Steelworks 3-ft x 24-in Aluminum Sheet Metal at Lowes.com

Hi Guys,
I'm running an A.C.E. but did add a guard to that using:

Shop Amerimax Plastic Gutter Guard at Lowes.com

Worked out very well with no negative effects. Just cut to length and attach using self tappers and washers.

Others have used Storm Door mesh or Stucco, depending on the size of the opening/louvers.

I used chicken wire screen. It's not pretty but it works.

Hi Phil,
I got the idea from this post:
Thor ACE grill screen - iRV2 Forums

The OP used a metal version of the gutter guard, the item l used was only $4 and light/cut with scissors. The problem I found was finding mesh that had the right size holes for stopping stones and not air flow. The A.C.E. has a plastic inner molding, just use short enough self-tappers not to pierce the chrome outer and I found some rubber washers to go underneath.

Don't have any pics right now, but I used FG screening with some pic hooks epoxied on the backside of grill for fastening. It stopped a stump of sagebrush last trip thru the desert.

Hi everyone, I used the aluminium metal sheet you can buy at Lowes for my Axis 2015. It looks great and it was easy to make and install. Here are a few pictures:

Not sure if this work.... if not, I'll try something else.

Claud28,
Nice job on the grill. I didn't realize that those models don't have a grill between the bars. My Windsport has large openings but they are covered with a very light weight screen. It might stop a small bird, but not anything larger.

Hi Metalman, Thanks for your positive comments When I toured the THOR factory in Elkhart in October, I met a couple who bought a Vegas 24.1 (twin model of Axis 24.1 but different layout) and they told me they had a stone that made a hole in the radiator. They also went through a hail storm and again, dammaged the rad. So, I just looked around, as I did not want something that looks cheap, but looks ok, and I built this. Next month I am going to Florida for 3 months and this will be the first time that I will see how it is. On some other forum threads, someone mentioned that the air flow to the rad was weakened and he noticed a higher engine temperature. Will see.

I used something very similar to replace a grill on a 1961 Ford Falcon. It didn't affect the operating temperature of the engine. Perhaps enough air will pass through the screen and enter from below to negate what little air restriction you have created. Good luck.

Thanks, that looks really great. Don't have time to do it before going to Florida this year, but when we return. Please let me know if it works as well as it looks.

Thanks

Claude28,
Like your work, but trying out how you bolted it on? Did you put something in the "groove" behind the chrome/plastic grill?
Thanks!

Hi Marine By Choice,
I removed the chrome part off the front end; then I took lengths of aluminum strapping (1 inch wide X 10 inches long); I rolled these around each horizontal part; I taped them in place; I put 5 of them on the top and middle section, and 4 on the bottom one. So, when I was ready to install the grid, I drilled into the strapping to be able to bolt the grid in place. Then I reinstalled the front chrome part on top so you don't see the strapping. I hope I am clear with my explanations . Let me know.
Thanks

Axis starting battery shut off

Hello, The house batteries shut off with inside switch. The starting battery does not seem to have a shut switch to use when storing. Maybe a Perko on/off attached to the positive side??? Any thoughts?

I have a knife switch I use on the negative terminal; keeps the chassis battery nice and charged.
