Yes... it needs to be in USE to charge....

We are talking about a way to check the output of the converter - for the measurement - being in 'USE' can read the battery voltage rather than the converter output...

It should be in USE normally when plugged in to shore power.

Update on this situation - we determined I have bad/dead batteries and Thor is going to warranty them. Rather than drive to a dealer and going through that ordeal I'm going to purchase the batteries myself and Thor will reimburse up to $90 per battery.

Now, given this is my first RV I know I want better than these stock batteries, but what should I look for in replacement batteries? Thanks in advance!

One if those 'it depends' answers...
How do you use your MH? Some questions:
Are you typically on shore power?
Do you like to boondock running off batteries a lot?
If so - for how long? what load do the batteries need to provide?

If the answer is typically shore power - limited boondocking - a good pair of deep cycle batteries the same size as what you had is likely enough...

Beyond that - becomes a math exercise for how long you will be without power, what you need to run, and what recharge options are available (generator, solar, etc), what battery storage space is available, and how much you are willing to spend...

I have 2 flooded deep cycle batteries - and can easily do a 3-4 day weekend with no problem... I don't have a residential fridge - and don't run an inverter. Occasional microwave/coffee maker use is via genny.

Others have a need for much longer times, might have an investment in solar panels, and additional batteries.
