Axis/Vegas Tire Rotation

Anyone here rotated their tires yet? If so, how was it done? Mine is approaching 7,000 miles now and was thinking of rotating them at my next oil change coming up soon. Was thinking that since they seem to be wearing normally and will probably be replaced around 5 years or so regardless of mileage if it is necessary

TIA

Larry,

I hadn't considered it until you asked. Now that I have, I doubt I will ever rotate them. Motorhome tires usually get replaced due to age, not wear. I think keeping them aligned and properly inflated is the ticket, and plan to replace them every 4 to 5 years.

I look forward to hearing other's opinions!

Regards,

Randy

Randy,

Thanks for the response. That's what I was thinking as well. Nice to get others opinions to consider.

As long as alignment is good and correct tire pressure is maintained you shouldn't have an issue. Having individual wheel weights rather than axle weights helps in the inflation area.

One thing to do is to crawl around the coach and record the DOT dates off the tires. I have seen new motorhomes come off the dealer's lot with tires that were up to 2 years old. In some cases I've seen a one year difference between tires on the same axle and even between inner and outer duals.

In the last 7 years I bought 2 sets of tires due to age. They were expensive but in both cases the price included a free motorhome.

That cracks me up... sometimes it's a great way to get new tires!

I think I'll try that on the DW in a couple of years. (I mean the new motorhome not a new wife)

Even though I had my 2014 Vegas 24.1 aligned and balanced right after I purchased it, I still got some irregular wear on one of the front tires At around 9000 miles. My local tire guy looked at it and decided it might be that particular tire. He rotated the two rear tires on the passenger side to the front and the two front tires to the rear passenger side and I have had no further wear issues on the front tires after 15,000 additional miles to Alaska and back. He said that rotating two tires from one side of the rear to the front was the best way to go, killing the urban myth of radial tires should not be repositioned so that they rotated in the opposite direction.

Can't this be done so both tires rotate as before or in opposite direction?

Larry
I'm guilty of around 10 years on my van's Michelins. They still look good as far as wear goes.

I do worry about a possible rear blowout which is potentially more dangerous than a tire on most 6-wheel motorhomes.

P.S.

Tire Tech Information - Tire Aging — Part #1

The British Rubber Manufacturers Association (BRMA) recommended practice, issued June, 2001, states, "BRMA members strongly recommend that unused tyres should not be put into service if they are over six years old and that all tyres should be replaced ten years from the date of their manufacture."
