Coach Awning

We have a 2016 ACE 30.1 and I'm wondering if there is a way to adjust or tilt the awning to allow water to run off when it's raining? I remember years ago before push button awnings, you could just lower one side! How is this possible now with the automatic push button awning?

there are adjustments on all of them, but depends on the type you have

Mine is a dometic 9100, and there are hand knobs on each arm, that are used.... kinda push the arm shorter then snug the knob down to hold it.
Hard to describe, but mess with it, I'm sure you'll figure it out.

more than likely it has push pins on each arm - push in the pin while pulling/pushing the main arm up/down... be careful not the pinch yourself. I have mine with the front two stops below the rear.

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd ask this question here.

Does anyone know when Thor changed from this kind of awning:

To this?

Any thoughts on advantages, problems, reliability, etc? And is it a switch or an "option"?

Are you sure that awning isn't just specific to the Hurricane line?

Looking at 2017 Axis/Vegas models for sale (like this one) still shows the same Care Free awning I have on mine.

Indeed if you pull up Thor's page showing all the motorhomes you can see that the Hurricane, Tuscany, and Venetian models have that awning. All the others appear to have an awning similar to my Care Free model.

Jamie, that's where I first noticed it on Hurricane. It could be a Carefree awning -- don't know. According to Carefree's website they were first to come out with "lateral arm" awning in 1990.

I had seen these types of awnings on vans and high-end DPs before but hadn't noticed them on lower-cost gasoline Class As. I'd guess they have been around for some time though.

I like the clean and aero lines but I'm not sure about how sturdy they are by comparison.

I have the carefree awning. Doesn't seem to be an adjustment on it for tilt. Nice awning though, does look streamline for sure

Here is a picture of the support arms on our 2015 Vegas 24.1 Carefree awning. If you look closely you can see the tilt adjust holes in the arm that goes from the lower right to upper left in the picture. The silver adjustment pin can be seen in the lowest hole (silver pin). Tis pin adjustment works like the pins you find in most folding table legs.

The front and rear arms have these adjustment holes. Pin in lowest hole = awning in highest position. Pin in highest hole = awning in lowest position. We have ours set so the awning is highest in front and lowest in back. Water and condensation runs off the awning rear forward corner.

You do not have to reposition the pin to retract the awning.

The manual recommends no more than 3 holes difference from each arm to prevent damage when retracting.

Thanks for reply Jerry.

Any feedback on how well it's worked so far? How is it in wind or rain? I assume it retracts automatically in wind, so I'm curious if it retracts as soon as there is any wind movement or does it have to get fairly strong? I'm also curious about rain? Does it retract automatically when it rains?

I'm wondering if there are significant downsides to this design? On the surface it looks like they would be used a lot more unless cost is much higher.

By the way, I agree they look streamline. I also like that there is nothing to walk into down low (assuming not all motorhomes are very tall), or arms to interfere with doors opening, etc.

Mostly I like that on smaller motorhomes with large MegaStorage compartments in back, the awning can be much longer than it could be otherwise. With these I assume the awning can run to rear corner of motorhome regardless of windows or compartment doors below.

This one covers from my entry door past the outdoor kitchen. It does take some wind, but I'm such a safety guy that if I see that wind an rain are moving in, the awning comes in and so do I. Lol. The only problem is like now, the afternoon sun hits for about 3 hours and the awning is really useless, without the adjustments. I do like the awning and I am tall, my class C and I fought all the time and I lost with some hits to the head. Good luck in your search!!

I see they have a model that addresses the sun issue, although as can be seen on top picture, sometimes even that doesn't provide much usable shade.

I have the same awning on my Windsport, you don't need to adjust anything, rain will run right off. Have already had a downpour on our awning with no problems, just open and enjoy!

Our awning also looked like that, almost straight out with very little pitch. Adjusted the arms for the pitch and now with maximum pitch the rain runs off fine. Jim.

Jim, was yours an option or did the MH come with it? Also, when you say you adjusted the arms for pitch, I assume that adjustment is semi-permanent, right? Do the arms pivot relative to the box? How difficult an adjustment was it, and how much pitch did you gain?

Our awning is the stock one that came on our 30.1. I don't remember how to do it because I did it over a year ago but it was all explained in the owners manual. I don't post pictures but it went from similar to the picture posted above to where the awning is about 18" lower. IIRC there were four positions each with a different pitch or you could make one end one notch lower and still not have a problem when retracting. Dragging my ladder out of the garage was probably the hardest part of the adjustment. It gave enough pitch that water runs off fine without any tilt so that is where it will stay. Jim.
