Dangling tube at rear transfer case

Just noticed this hanging down. What is it and did it shake loose? Do I need to resecure it before I travel again?Click image for larger version

Follow the tubing back to the source. It might be the differential vent. Or it could be something more important.

Agree with Walker find out what’s on the other end! It looks like a vent for something. Unless it doesn’t do anything at all - as in a scrap of hose that somehow got left behind during the build - it should be either secured somewhere or reconnected to whatever its unconnected from. I’ve never seen a fitting quite like that.

Thanks...yep it is the breather tube for rear differential that shook loose. Apparently quite common.

Really? I’ll have to check mine. Why does it need a hose like that for goodness sake!

Necessary to vent any pressure build up that may occur so seals don't get blown out. It was probably zip tied in place and the tie broke.

I certainly understand the need to vent, but why does it need an 18 inch hose? It looks like it has a fitting of some sort on the end. Does that connect to a valve or something?

The plastic piece on the end is usually there to keep contaminants from going IN the tube and to let the pressure OUT. It is so long so that the end is held up as high as possible in the event the rig is driven through a puddle of water, etc. Most trucks have them. My old 4x4 Chevy has them on both front and rear differentials.

Learn things from this forum every day! Thank you. Next time I’m under my coach I’ll look to see how mine is routed.

They need to be as high as possible so you can go off road with your RV and cross that 2 foot deep creek.

Seriously. They have it up high to prevent water intrusion (hence the 18 inches). Zip tie as high as you can go but leave some slack for the axle to go up and down as well.
