Furnace Floor Registers Vents Blocked by Loose Foil

When you look into the vents (registers) of the floor vents that provide heat, there is some foil tape that is visible there. On our vents, that foil has come up and is now blocking the bottom of the vents. I unscrewed the vent from the floor and attempted to push the foil tape back down, but it's already come back up.

Has anyone run into this issue yet? Did you remove the foil tape or did you replace it with fresh tape?

I had the same problem. The cause in my case was all the saw dust that the tape was placed over. I removed the tape from 3 different vents and of course the sticky side was covered with saw dust. So i vacuumed real well before replacing the tape. 2 years later and its still attached. Easy fix...

Yup, had to do the same thing on our former coach, went down to a travel trailer mfg that was close and bought a roll of the tape,(also wiped down the surfaces with alcohol before applying the tape)

Remove and replace. If it didn't stick the first time, it's not going to stick by pressing it back on again. Tape available at Home Depot and better quality the mfg. used. Get the kind that has a paper back to be removed when you install it.

Thank you all. I was a bit disconcerted running the heat through the night with this particular issue. Off to Home Depot!

Does this foil tape serve any purpose other than just give the vent a better look?

It is used in home HVAC system to seal all the seams in the duct work. I assume it is for the same purpose in the RV.

Since everyone (it seems) has a roll or three of Duct-Tape laying around: would that work?

I was considering that myself, but I was concerned about it's heat reflecting properties. I can only assume that's why it was put inside the vent to reflect the heat outwards through the vent and versus soaking into the duct below.

Unfortunately Duct tape is not used for ducts, foil tape is. Seems odd, I know, but that's the truth.

Duct tape would dry out and come off because of the dry hot air blowing over it.

What are the furnace ducts made out of? It looks like wood with a heavy shiny glaze over it.

Thanks for the info!
From now on: I'll just use it to keep my Ducks closer to home!

Thank you all again for the feedback on this.

I went over to Lowes and picked up some aluminum foil tape. The roll that I picked up was a bit on the cheap side, so I'm just going to test this repair on one of the vents to make sure it continues to work.

Check out the attached pictures. Look how much saw dust I pulled out of the vent with my hands.

Just for reference, I measured the width of the stock tape and it was about 2.75".

Attach piece of garden hose to vacuum. There will be a LOT more sawdust to be removed. Clean ducts - cleaner air and less dust inside. While in duct cleaning mood, remove ceiling vents. Attach long string to end of tape measure. Push in duct to next vent. Tie fluffy rag to middle of string and pull rag back and forth thru duct.

Talk about particle board ducts for the furnace, how about the foam ducts for the AC's? Consists of crudely cut channels in the foam. A year later I still get some foam particles that blow out when I run the AC's.

In the Miramar 34.4, the vent is right on the bathroom wall. It took a bit of work but I was able to remove it. Afterwards, I did modifications to the hole and the vent to ensure it I could pull it out easier next time.

What I’m a by irked about is not the loose foil but the vent was still partially wrapped in the shrink wrap it cane in!!! I had black plastic melted bits flying out of the vent over the past week we’ve been running the furnace.
