High heat check Gen oil

Driving from NM to MT the road temps extremely hot.
Running generator entire time on road.
Lora heard a tick tick sound.
When we got to campground, checked oil and low.
Added oil all great.
Good luck our friends.

I have a few 12v electric radiator fans laying(lying?)around and am considering attaching one to the generator.

If this is something you'd consider,
They mount easily with just stainless steel zip ties.

And
A cheap car hood scoop on the gen door would force more air while on the road.

I’m a little surprised that the oil pressure sensor didn’t shut it off.

I just came back from our trip from Bryce Canyon, UT back to Vegas 2 days ago. Temp was between 105-110 and elevation started around 7K feet, going down as we approach St. George, UT. My son came to the front and told me that the front AC stopped working. I pulled over and re-started the Gen. Shut down after 10-15 Secs. Gave me a 36 code (which I researched and found out to be caused by a lot of different things). When we got back to our place, I turned on the Gen and it fired back up. Started the AC to cool down a bit while we unload. I guess the Gen shuts off by itself when it gets too hot. Oil level was fine (I changed it about 3 months ago and have used it for 15 hrs since last oil change).

We drove from Tombstone Arizona to Anaheim Hills California this past Tuesday. Temps hit 117 in Tempe Arizona. We had our generator on the entire time with no issues. It provide power for both roof air units and our refrigerator. I was a bit surprised it didn't shit down due to high heat. It was on for over 7 hours.

The dipstick in 4000 series onan qg is incorrect compared to what the manual calls for.
Not a lot, but it is. Maybe 8 ounces or so.

There is no oil pressure sensor in an Onan 4K generator - may not even be a low oil level sensor.

Huh... when I changed mine I carefully measured the oil I put in to the exact ounce (without looking I forget the ounces??). With the motorhome perfectly level, this brought the oil very near to overspill on the filler tube.

I screwed in the yellow cap/dipstick and let it sit about 15 minutes. When I checked it, it was exactly on the full mark, and just below the filler neck top.

Mine was manufactured in 2019... maybe they changed something?? For me its simple... If I remove the yellow cap and don't see oil, it's low.

Just below low on cap.

That’s good to know, thanks. Sometimes such a sensor will leak quite a bit of oil itself if it fails.

Here and other places.

From memory:
A quart
A pint
4oz
2teaspoons.

Or not.

My dipstick did not match the owners manual.
I didn't care.
It didn't use any oil.

I have a new gen now. Without draining it i won't know which is right, the stick or the manual.

Just something of interest.
Who's correct? Owners manual or stick?

Maybe because there is no oil pump and filter.

If manual and dipstick didn't agree, my plan B was... if oil was low according to dipstick, fill until the dipstick indicated full - or near overflow - whichever came first.

My money is on the dipstick being correct... and the manual is a typo/misprint. Terrible proof readers...

P.S. I did the exact same with the V-10. Came out exactly on the mark. I'm wondering if the discrepancies of past on that are due to poor manual proof reading?
