Notes from an Oil Change

Time for the ACE's pre-winter oil change. Last year I took it to a Ford medium duty truck dealer that's about 30 miles away. Ford said a dealer much closer worked on Class A's, but of course the dealer said no they don't - they were listed on Ford's motorhome maintenance site too.

So.... I can do that. I didn't really want to make the trip back to the truck center. 60 mile round trip plus the lady that works the service desk needs training on customer relations.

A few notes for next time. I've done many car oil changes, but this one was a bit different.

1a - Lose weight - its a really tight squeeze under the rig. I did the Safety Plus and front CHF last year, but the coach was on my driveway which has a slope and then a flat spot near the house so there was a lot more front clearance Or...

1b - Next year lift the coach on the levelers and use my jack stands

Which one gets used is up to some debate. DW expects 1b

2 - Get the type of filter wrench of the type that fits on the end of the filter and then uses a 3/8" ratchet. I have an older wrench that wraps around the filter. Clearance is tight to use this type (see 1a). It eventually worked, but wasn't a lot of fun.

3 - Pay attention to filter. I had a lot of trouble getting a new filter on until I discovered that the gasket from the old filter hadn't come off and was preventing the threads from engaging. Then there was the dropped filter into the gravel and an extra trip to parts store as I wasn't going to chance having contaminated the filter.

4 - Buy one quart bottles and not the big 5 quart containers. The clearance between the oil fill and the bottom of the dash didn't allow me to use the measuring funnel/tubing thing I bought for generator oil changes. However I did have clearance once I removed the tube. It did work petty well as the measuring section has a valve on the bottom so I could put a quart in and then position it and open the valve. It took awhile for each load to run out the funnel. Quart bottles and a small funnel would have worked a lot better

5. With a late fall oil change, make sure that a fine Colorado Stout is available for the recovery.

I just take mine to a quick oil change place. Some have doors large enough for RVs.

Vegas vs full sized Class A.

While I try 1a for other reasons... 1b wins for the oil change...

My dealer charged me $227 for an oil change on a Challenger 37kt. Learned a lesson ask the price before proceeding! I would like to know what is a reasonable amount to pay from your experience?

Get a Fumoto valve to replace the drain plug. Make changing the oil a breeze.

My local auto service center changes oil for $45. Great price and excellent service. I’m getting to old to be under there anyway. Jerry

Usually do my own, but this time had local Ford dealer do it (the only work they will do on an RV). Normal oil change price plus 'per quart' over 5... Was under $45 total.

I have a Fumoto valve (F106SX M14-1.5 Sx Series) I purchased for my Axis but never installed and will sell if anyone’s interested. Been opened but completely intact. Just decided I would leave the oil changes to the Pros. PM me for details.

A valve is practically a must for the F53 chassis with the V10. The Oil plug is right over the crossmember and no pan is going to work. Also, Someone here (HalfPrice??) said, on the same vehicle, that using a 32 oz cup over the bottom of the filter saves a mess.

My next change will include valve installation and trying the cup or 2 liter bottle.

There a big price difference between per qt vs the 5 qt at our local wally world so I deal with the 5 qt. I use a funnel and hose; place the funnel under the wind shield wiper and a short step ladder. Works great.
The local Ford dealer won't touch an RV for an oil change and the RV won't fit the local quick change oil places.

You lucked out on number 3. I've changed the oil many times and always check the old filter for the O-ring. Didn't check once last year while changing the oil in January on our van. Yup, 6 quarts of fresh oil on the driveway after startup! Talk about a mess to clean up.

When I took the ACE in to the Ford Truck dealer they charged me $75 for an oil change and chassis lube. I also had the alignment done for $149. At the same time I had them reflash the ECM to fix the problem with the transmission not downshifting properly - Ford has a TSB out on the problem, and I had to point them too it. The transmission fix was the main reason I took it to Ford.

I didn't lube the chassis at this time. I'm planning on putting SumoSprings on in the spring and I'll have the alignment rechecked and the chassis lubed at the same time. I plan on taking it to Denver Spring and Suspension as others on the forum have had similar work done there.

The same guy that takes care of my car and truck takes care of the RV engine maintenance. The Harley still goes to the dealer.
