Oil change frequency

Just curious what people are thinking about how many miles in between oil changes. Sure I realize driving conditions and oil type dictates frequency but want to hear what u think.

Depends on how you use your unit. Some people put many miles on their unit and will have to change the oil a bit more frequently (full timers who frequently change campgrounds for instance).

Others, such as ourselves, use our unit during the summer on several weekends barely using up any oil at all (in our case I get the oil changed prior to putting it away for the winter so that its ready to go in the spring).

Since we tow in the mountains, above 7000 feet, we go between 5kmiles and 7500 miles. That's using synthetic.

I figure that oil cheap, when compared to motor pieces...
We change between 3,000; and 5,000 miles.

What does the chassis manufacturer recommend? Personally I'd change it in the spring after winter storage to remove the condensation that formed during the winter. If you're a summer weekend user & not a lot of miles annually I'd do once a year, if lots of use/miles I'd go by what's recommended in the manual.

On ours, Mercedes recommends 15,000 miles or one year. The thing to remember is the kind of driving you are doing. With any diesel, any prolonged idle times, will tend to contaminate the oil with fuel, just the nature of the beast. Most diesel engine manufactures recommend that idle time does not exceed 5% of total run time. More than that, oil change frequency is reduced. Running in cold weather reduces that frequency interval, as does running a lot in stop and go traffic. So the reality is that manufactures recommended oil change interval should be taken as a guide, and reflects driving in or near perfect conditions, rather then in the real world where most of us live, work and play.

This is always a really safe course of action...
Change it at the start of the Season, and it reduces down-time when you'd rather be camping!
