Outdoor Shower latch

Just got home from a 30 minute drive and the outside shower door was flapping in the wind. this is the second time it did this and it seems to lock and hold with shaking, but comes open enroute.

The plastic latch inside that the metal lock hits is only about 1 cm wide.

Anyone have this problem and a fix!?

Yeah happens all the time on our Axis. I've been able to prevent it by carefully locking the cover, ensuring that the lock is vertical.

I've found that if I just turn the key all the way until it stops the hatch opens on the road. If I instead make sure that the key is vertical it will stay closed. It's hard to describe but I think it's important to get the squared off end of the "locking bar" parallel to the top behind the little locking nub that holds it in place.

I had considered simply screwing something in to reinforce the locking nub.

I had the very same problem, on the road and then a big "Bang", stopped and found my door open and the water hose had fell out and the shower head "Gone"!

I count myself lucky since that hasn't happened (yet) to us. Whenever I stop and see the door open that is my first thought: "glad the hose stayed put".

Just a thought here since my outdoor shower is in a storage compartment attached to the water terminal.

Would it be possible to get a cam lock with a longer lever so that the door will stay locked when it is actually locked? Thinking back to my Class C the cam locks on those storage compartment doors had a metal lever that was held to the lock by one Phillips head screw. The same type of lock is on my current coach on the door for the fresh water fill.

On my Axis the lever on the cam lock touches the wall of the compartment. If I got a longer lever I'd have to cut a slot in the compartment (admittedly this would solve the problem though).

I do the same thing Jamie described -- I make sure the key is perfectly vertical. When we first picked up our Vegas, I could hardly turn the lock at all. I sprayed it with silicon spray and left it sit a day -- now it turns with no effort at all. Just have to be sure the key is vertical when locked orvit will pop open.

Just a side note, my shower compartment plus a few others had the generic CH751 key. I measured the length of the cylinders and order key-ed alike, non-key retaining locks from Padlocks for Less.

At one campground, it was reported that kids were going into the shower compartment, turning on the hot and cold and than pressing the slide shut off. A couple of RVer's thought their water heaters went bad.

I feel better now that mine is locked with a not so generic key. Also the exterior TV and the compartment with the inverter had the generic CH751 key

Darren,

Padlocks for Less was the only site I found where you can get the keyed alike, non-key retaining locks. If you keep the order number, you can order additional locks in the future and they will key it to your current locks.

High Security Tubular Locks

Make sure you select non-key retaining or the key won't come out when you unlock.

Looking at them now Fred! Were they an exact fit in the hole or did you have to enlarge it? Did you get the 5/8 cylinder length or different size?(Also available in 1-1/8", 7/8" and 3/8")

They fit the hole exactly. I used the 5/8" on the shower, the other ones were a 1-1/8.

I really like the fact that they are all keyed alike and non-key retaining

Thanks for this valuable factoid, and for the earlier post with the website. Locking with a 751 key is like not locking it at all, especially for coaches left in storage. Had wanted to order new locks, but didn't know where to go or which locks to order. I'll get one for the LP compartment, too. Sure don't want anyone messing around in there!

I do not believe the LP compartment is supposed to be locked. If I'm not mistaken they come without locks due to DOT requirements. I could be mistaken but I don't think so.

Agree with dave. Our propane compartment has no lock - - just 2 thumb latches.

My bad. You are correct, a quick search found that RVIA regulations require that compartment to be unlocked to allow access to the valves. Scratch that idea!

Had to cut a little plastic out of the outside shower to allow the longer latch to fit but this in itself will help it be more secure!
