Replacing converter
The converter on our Class A has given up the ghost and is not putting out any voltage. It is in a very confined area and replacement is going to be a nightmare. Can I just disconnect it and install a new unit and wire it directly to my battery?

no, it passes power thru the Fuse panel to the 12v items in the RV - that's it's job, not directly to the batteries... now, the CHARGER is what is wired to the batteries.

Canadian Mods
Yeah, you could do that, but try explaining that mod to a prospective buyer when you go to sell the coach. Just bite the bullet and do it right.

The three converters that I've worked with only have one each positive and negative 12V lugs. They do not have separate outputs for RV 12V devices and the battery.
In this case, relocating the converter and connecting it to the battery with sufficiently sized wire should work fine.
That said, there're the issues of dealing with the wires at the original location, air flow for cooling, and other factors to consider.

OP didn't mention what brand of converter has failed, but most times the converter is contained in the lower portion of the power distribution panel (both 12 VDC and 120 VAC). If that is the case in your RV, you can replace just the converter section without any major wiring at all.
This happens to be the model in my RV; very similar to many in recent years.
Just as an example:

There are manufacturers that build upgraded replacement converter/chargers that will direct replace some older OEM chargers with a “minimum of wiring issues”. Progressive Dynamics is one such vendor and depending on what you have now may allow you to swap out the old for a new. I do like their remote charge wizard which allows you to control and/or monitor which charge state the converter/charger is in. Shop around and see what options and prices will work for what you are replacing. Of course the simplest solution is a direct replacement if still available, but the OEM unit may have limited charge states or reliability that you want to improve upon. Having some electrical/power experience is an asset with the swap outs.

My converter was located under the bed, mine recently went out and I replaced it with Progressive #9260, it was a simple replacement and appears to be working flawlessly...
