RV refrigerators operate on "gas absorption" in which hydrogen gas under pressure and ammonia are heated in a boiler tube. The problem develops when the refrigerator’s cooling unit boiler tube corrodes, cracks and expels hydrogen gas at high pressure, which can spontaneously combust, or reach other ignition sources, causing a fire”. The issue has affected both Norcold and Dometic refrigerators. There have been a number of recalls and "fixes" which basically shut the refrigerator down if overheating is detected. One lawsuit claims the refrigerators have contributed to over 3000 fires since 1997.
