Door opens by itself

2015 Siesta Sprinter 24st. On a recent trip the coach door began popping open for no particular reason. I know I should travel with the dead bolt in place (and I certainly do now) but why would it suddenly start doing it? Even with the bolt in place the latch pops open while traveling. Flex in the coach frame? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Latch or striker plate needs adjusting but always travel with both of them locked.

Thanks Gritz. That would seem to be the obvious solution but I don’t see a any way to adjust either the latch or striker plate. I guess I need to study it a bit more.

It may be the striker plate needs moving outward a tad. Try putting a thin washer behind the plate at both screw holes. If that works then you can have frame adjusted a little in same outward direction. Does the entire lock assembly allow for a small adjustment either way? Maybe you could loosen it and move it over a tad.

the RV body will flex some when driving (esp on rough roads).... so try what they suggested above and use the deadbolt 99% of the time (esp on long trips).

We had an issue with our door popping opened when we first got our rig. I was told that if the rig is not leveled well the frame will flex which could affect the door causing it to pop opened.

This information was in conjunction with a door inspection during warranty repairs.

I was skeptical at first, but I will say that we have not had this issue since the first couple of times during our first months of ownership. I figure we are better at leveling and that may be what was happening at first.

We do still get a situation where the door sometimes closes and latches but does not totally close tight unless it is closed with a strong forceful push. I believe it is a 2 stage lock and sometimes only the first stage catches and holds. This also seems to be intermittent which I also just chalk up to leveling.

I also think that our door might have been installed in such a way that we have little room for error when it comes to proper closing with less than perfect leveling. there does not seem to be any real latch adjustment capability from what I see.

We deadbolt the door while traveling.
