Actually I believe it is a vast conspiracy between the fastener folks and the tool manufacturers to keep us buying tools. With bolts they went from 4 sided to 6 sided and then started using 12 point. Since the same wrenches would handle most of these they then started mixing US and metric bolts on the same platform. For screws they went from straight tip to cross trip to torx and now 8 point.
What's a person to do other than buy more tools for the tool box.
Blame, or give credit to, Fastenal first and then snap on, craftsman and mac.
The only tool I know that will handle all types of bolts and screws is the trusty smoke wrench.
The smoke wrench will remove any screw, bolt nut along with any parts nearby.
