Type of Snow Chains

Before we start, let me just say that it is required by law to carry chains on I-5 between Redding CA to Cottage Grove OR until the end of March. So "don't drive in the snow" is not an option since I plan on using that road on March 1st.

With that in mind, I went looking for tire chains today. I already have the quick install cable chains for my toad. The salesman said with the weight of the motorhome, he suggested that I go with the older chain style snow chains. They are actually cheaper than the newer cable chains.

And I assume that if required, I only have to put chains on the outside rear / drive tires of the motorhome. None are needed on the toad while towing.

Any opinions?

Shouldn't be any different then a semi chaining up. Last I knew only the outside was required.

I was told the cable chains have less chance of breaking a section and tearing up the coach. I used chains for years in Wyoming and Nebraska and beat the hell out of a few fenders, mostly on company pickups.

If we should decide to head up to Reno for a weekend during snow season I will buy cable chains to be legal but wait out the conditions. Luckily we can be flexible so should never again need to chain up.

I don't think I would drive MH in conditions so bad you have to put chains on them...especially towing a car. I would be concerned about the car jack-knifing or the sway pulling the rear of the coach out of line. Drive slow and keep the toilet paper roller full.

The Same here: you're "flirtin' with disaster"; but the choice is yours.
Good luck!

I don't want to. BUT, I have tickets for preseason baseball in Scottsdale (a loyal SF Giants fan). My only two routes out of Eugene are south on US 5 or east on OR 58. Both require chains to be carried.
