Water Heater Drain

Anyone have any advice on removing the plastic drain plug on a water heater? The person who put it in apparently thought it never needed to be removed. I could try channel-locks or vise-grips but I'm afraid of rounding it over.

Any info really appreciated..

Jim

Buy a new plug first then go at it and have fun!

Funny..

LOL I was afraid the question didn't have a good answer. Guess I'll break out the channel-locks and vise-grips. After I buy a new plug, of course.

Use a socket and a ratchet. That's what I use and have never rounded one out.

Buy a few spares; they should be replaced every few seasons anyway.

Use a 15/16” socket with an extension. You can get it on the plug coming up at an angle from below that annoying cross piece. I tried channel locks until I discovered there is room from under that crosspiece.

I took mine out and put in a 1/2 x 3/8 reducer. Next a 9” braided faucet hose with a 3/8” ball valve on the end. Now when I want to drain it I swing the hose out and open the valve. Doesn’t run all over the inside of the water heater that way.

15/16 six point socket, and a short extension, and ratchet.

Water Heater Drain

Thanks for all the advice, guys. The 15/16 socket and extension did the trick. I had to pry up that cross piece a bit (what were the engineers/designers thinking?)
I like pstandiford's idea of the reducer/ball valve/ short hose line. I think I'll give that a try.
