Fire extinguishers

Just a question that already know the answer. Are the fire extinguishers in our motorhome's really supposed to function? We had the need to use ours yesterday and of course it did not work at all. We had a minor fire in your pump and motor for our pool. Wife went to the coach, grabbed the extinguisher to try to put the fire out, but no dice. It did not work at all. Coach is going in for some unrelated warranty work Monday. We shall see.
Anyone else have any experience with their fire extinguisher?

As Frank mentioned there was a Kidde fire extinguisher recall early last year regarding certain manufacturing dates. I contacted Kidde, gave them the date on mine which fell within the recall dates and they sent me a new one. You might want to check with them and give them the details.

Here is the link to the thread I posted last year on the recall to include links to the Kidde site to check the fire extinguishers.

The extinguisher in our coach was/is not part of the recall. Way different serial and model numbers. The unit is properly charged, it just did not go off when the handle was squeezed. We will see if Thor/Kidde will make it right. They are not that expensive, so even if they don't, we will replace the unit. Glad this happened at home, not on the road and the kitchen area had a fire.

I would contact Kidde since it is their product that failed. Could be they need another round of recalls.

Fire Extinguisher

One thing you should do on a yearly basis is take the fire extinguisher out, turn it over and hit it 4 or 5 times with a rubber hammer. The product that the use will compact in the bottom and using rubber hammer loosens it. We have to do it with fire extinguishers we use for professional fireworks.

For what reason was the previous recall? I am curious now.

If I remember correctly there were 2 recalls. One for the extinguishers not working at all and the second was the extinguisher would not function if the trigger was pulled released and pulled again. Basically defective parts from a vendor.

i'm late on this one...
but I would contact the manufacturer, recall or not, since it didn't work.
Are you fairly sure the gauge still indicated in the green?
If so I would expect that they would help, maybe even sending a replacement free since it failed.

oh, meant to add
I added an extinguisher back in the bedroom, in case I need to come at something form that end.
And If I remember correctly I think that I also replaced the one by the door with a more capable ABC extinguisher with a bit more capacity
and the other related thing I did was install a smoke detector under the bed in the electrical compartment

I also installed a second extinguisher in the bedroom. Bought a first alert when I was travelling and the original Kidde was recalled. After receiving the replacement for the Kidde I mounted the First Alert in the bedroom.

I also have 2 of these, One is in a kitchen cabinet and the other in the bathroom cabinet.

Robot Check

I also purchased 2 fire blankets that travel with us. Overkill, we won't know until they are used or I die without having to use them.

I ordered the blankets from Amazon. Here is the link to the ones I ordered. I posted a thread on the forum when I installed them.

Thanks for the re-run.

Doc
Doc.. call this number and have the number which is stamped on the
fire extinguisher ready to give to the customer service person.
On our extinguisher, it was on the backside of it near the bottom.

Contact the Kidde Replacement Center at 877-524-2086 immediately for more information
