Young e 450 using oil?

I changed the oil in my 2006 e 450 (31 foot).

It used a quart in about 2500 miles. It has 16,000 miles on it.

Normal or too much? Used full Synthetic. Used the Motorcraft filter and just put in 6 quarts. Never checked it after I changed it since that is exactly what the manual calls for as I remember?

In general a quart in 2500 miles is nothing to worry about, and adding one quart between oil changes is really no big deal. Just monitor to be sure the consumption doesn't increase.

I certainly would not be thrilled with using a quart of oil in 2,500 miles on a gas engine with 16,000 miles. I would first check the area around my filter and plug to make sure there are no signs of leakage.

Is it really a 2006 or was that a mistype? I have had three V-10s over the past 10 years and all of them burned a quart of oil when they were new. After they were broken in, none of them burned any oil between 5000 mile oil changes. I certainly would watch it carefully to see if it gets worse. As the engine breaks in it could get better. If it really is a 2006 then that us a different matter.

I would think at 16,000 miles it's broken in. Like Joe said, I would start looking for leaks. I'm sure if you went to Ford they would say your consumption is acceptable. Some brands of oil tend to be used quicker then others, what are you using?

Your 'using' of a quart may be in the filter you changed.

6 quarts is the correct amount for the 2-valve V10 when oil and filter is changed; assuming stock system. System modifications could affect capacity.

After changing oil I always confirm level, even though I also check for leaks. 6 quarts has always worked correctly for my stock engine.

Presently I'm using 1/2 to 1 quart between changes that I perform (or have done) every 3,00o to 5,000 miles, depending on how quickly I accumulate mileage and amount of highway driving. My E-350 V10 van is up to 160,000 miles though. Up to about 100,000 miles I never added oil between changes.

As a side note, I took a 5,000-mile trip in a rented E-450 30-foot Class C that had just under 100,000 miles on it, and ended up adding oil at approximately 1 quart every few tanks of fuel (went through 4 or 5 quarts). This rental motorhome had not been maintained well and was about to be taken out of service.

It is indeed a 2006 and had 12,000 miles on it when I got it. I used Mobile 1 full synthetic. I didn't notice any leaks spots accumulating under the rig. I will have to watch in the spring. I put exactly 6 quarts in since I used the Motorcraft filter (If memory serves me it is the 820S filter.). I live in PA so the engine does get run at 4-4.5k RPM to get over some of these mountains.

Even my f150 with 135k never used this much oil. It had the v8 version of this engine. I am glad I caught it before it went below "low"!!

I have had issues with oil consumption when using full synthetics. I use the synthetic blend from Motorcrafr in my V-10 Vegas. Have not needed too add oil between 3000 mile change interval. If I put full synthetic in my Suburban, it will use a quart every 1000 miles, conventional oil is one quart in 3000 mile interval. Prior GM products were same,

I had a 2006 V10 that started using oil with low mileage. Investigation revealed malfunctioning PCV valves. There were 2. One was drawing oil from engine. There may be a service bulletin out there about it. I was advised to get replacement part from dealer. This engine used 5W20 regular oil. After that fix the engine did not use oil until 60000 miles. Used a quart every 1500 miles to start. Ford said this was ok. If I used 5W30 it used less oil. At 130000 miles it used 1 quart every 1000 miles.

1200 miles a year is really hard on an engine. That probably means it got serviced every couple of years - at best and the oil stayed in there a long time. Engines are designed to be used - not sit. I am not surprised it is burning oil. I would have the engine really gone over by an expert. The PCV valves are certainly someplace to start.

"Have the engine really gone over by an expert"? Wow you are much more picky than I am! I am going to try the semi-synthetic motorcraft that Ford calls for and was suggested earlier in this forum first. And watch it more closely between change intervals. Poor engine revs 4500 rpm' is for minutes at a time getting over these Eastener mountains - I know they aren't the Rockies but not the plains either! Maybe some use isn't so bad.

It could be a lot cheaper in the long run to check those PCV valves and engine seals.

Just recently did first oil change on new E450 at about 5000 miles and I was only about 1/2 quart low.

Not really "poor": The V-10 is happy as a clam running all day at 4500 rpm.

More like: "your poor ears"
