Class C towing

I know many of you tow Jeeps. But how many of you tow a jeep with a Class C.
I have a 2017 Four Winds 31W. Its 32' and weighs 14600 fully loaded. But no water. I am looking for people that actually tow a 4 door jeep with the same size rv with close to the same weight.
How does it do towing it. Is it to heavy?

I have a 29FE and have just finished my first season. I live near Nashville, TN. Traveled across the Cumberland Plateau, the Great Smokey Mtns, to the SC Shore and back with no problems pulling a JKU. Several other trips and all is well

We tow a 3500 lb Vehicle with our 31W and it has no problem. Towing capacity is 7500 lbs. Remember the same engine in some of the class A's has a GCWR of 30,000 lbs.

Check Jeep forums.
Here's the one we belong to. This link takes you to a sub forum dedicated to
Towing and the Towed - 2014+ Jeep Cherokee Forums

We tow a 2016 Cherokee limited 4 down, with our E450 Citation, 30' with 3 slides so it should weigh close to yours.
We towed a little over 3500 miles this past summer from north Texas to south Dekota to Las Vegas to central Colorado then back to Texas.
Zero problems in the mountains and in 110 degrees going to/from Las Vegas drove 70/75 where the speedlimits allowed which was most of the 3.5k miles.

Which transmission do you have: five-speed, or six?
I think that the newer six-speed versions give you more towing capacity; but you should be "good to go" with either one.

I tow a full size pickup, approximately 5300 lbs, with my class c outlaw and it seems to do fine.

Jusjay: I noticed that you have what looks like two 10 foot kayaks on your Jeep. We are new to RVing and also have a JK that I tow with a class A. We also have two 10 foot yaks that I would like to put on the Jeep. What do you use for a roof rack to carry the kayaks? Thanks

Hi Steamboat, I use the Thule Hullavator system. I tried other but this is by far the best and the easiest load/unload system out there. their little high pricewise but in my opinion worth it. I did shop around and got them for half price.

I've used the Yakima BowDown:
https://www.amazon.com/Yakima-BowDow.../dp/B0012SA4QY
Only 'assist' is one end sitting on rack while lifting the other...

Looked at the ShowDown - as overhead lifting is more challenging now - but it doesn't fit factory crossbars (for another vehicle).

Our toad is a softtop 2 dr Wrangler - haven't found a good way to do anything on top with that one... The available roof rack (runs down to hard body to anchor) looks like it makes opening the 'partial' or full roof challenging... even when not carrying anything.

Is your 31W on an E-450 chassis...or a super C F-550?

This is a sidetrack question....how much does your 4 door jeep weigh as it would be towed (with stuff, modifications, winch, full gas, etc...)?

Mine is an E-450 chassis & I've been wondering if I could get away with towing it. My biggest limitation for 4-down towing would be my hitch rating at 5,000 lbs....best I can tell those 4-door jeeps are right on the ragged edge of that "factory empty"

Our 2016 31W is on E450 chassis. The hitch is rated to tow 8,000 lbs but the leftover GCWR is around 7,000 lbs.

Dinghy guide only lists the weight of the 4-door Wrangler at 4,000 lbs.

4,000 pounds? They're usually a couple of hundred pounds heavier than that...
It depends on how they're outfitted, what you're carrying inside them, and how full the fuel tank is...

I did extensive research on 2017 Four Winds before buying mine. Your 2017 E450 chassis has a GVW of 14,500 and GCVW of 22,000. Your hitch should be rated to tow 8,000 lbs but only 500 lbs of tongue weight (insignificant when flat towing or dolly towing). You scaled a bit over the GVW but you have plenty leftover for towing (roughly 7400 lbs) The V10 and 6 speed transmission has plenty of power for towing. As mentioned it's used in far heavier Class A motorhomes just fine. You will want to get the auxiliary breaking installed for safety (and to be legal in most states).

I tow my car trailer and convertible behind my Four Winds just fine that was built on a substandard E350 chassis.

I currently have a 2018 THOR Quantum KM-24 (25’) 3.0 diesel. Factory rep said 5,000 lb. tow rating would tow my 4,700 lb. ford 150 4x4.super cab. Not sure I want to install tow equipment and not be able to tow in Colorado. Any help in this regard

Looking at your GCWR of 15,250 lbs, I doubt you have 5,000 lbs of capacity left when you are loaded. The hitch may be rated at 5,000 lbs but that doesn't mean the MH can pull that much. My Chateau has a 8,000 lbs hitch but can really only pull around 6,500-7,000 lbs with what is left of the GCWR. I suggest getting your MH weighed then decide if you can pull it. Salesmen have been wrong before.

Thor KM-24

Thanks for the info on TOAD pulling. An RV friend in Washington (State) said its lunacy to even think of pulling my F-150 @ 4700# behind a Thor KM-24. He also suggested I look into a Wrangler 2-door which is around 3800#. Any thoughts on this idea?
