Braver than me!!!

Saw 2 set-up just the same this morning leaving the park. They were 42-45' motorhomes towing Jeep Liberty's towing trailered atv behind the Jeep, they looked 100' long. To all you MH folks out there is this safe & is it even legal, NO WAY THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!Click image for larger version

Braver than me too. I don't even tow one vehicle or trailer much less anything that would resemble a train.

The thing that would worry me about that setup is brakes. That 2nd trailer must have surge brakes on it to make this even possible.

In addition to that: Isn't the towbar supposed to be level?

I dont think that is legal in all States ! Seems like we have this discussion with someone in the past.

And...we agree...pulling one item behind RV is more than enough !!
We can all imagine the what-ifs of that situation...
but, my first thought is...where do you park it !!

This parks (Oasis RV Resort just west of Amarillo) sites were long enough they didn't unhook, but it's one of only a few in the country they could do it.

To me it looks more stable than pulling a car behind a 5th wheel trailer, or a trailer behind another trailer.

A trailer like a boat, behind a camper trailer, would concern me a lot more. Yet it must be relatively common because if you do a search, there are lots of people doing it.

Granted, not for me either.

After having seen such a double towing rig a few years ago, I asked a Florida Highway Patrol officer about the legality. He said as long as the total did not exceed 65 feet, it was legal. I would be tempted to stop and measure some I have seen.
As mentioned, "Braver than I!" to try towing such a rig.

I am sure it depends on the state law. California, you will see someone with a 5th wheel with a boat behind it. I believe it requires a Class B (big rig type) license. You can also have people in a 5th wheel as long as there is electronic communication with the driver in the truck. Not my cup of tea but to each his own.

Can this set up be backed up. I'm not the best at backing up 1 trailer let alone 2.

Had a fellow towing a car only & said "Yes I can back up, about a foot", so there's no way of back this set up.

I flat towed a rail buggy behind my dad's 4X4 pickup when I was in school. It backed up fine once I got over letting the front tires skid across the pavement.

In this case it didn't hurt anything and the truck didn't even notice it. The front end of the buggy, made from VW Beetle, was pretty light though.

I've since thought that a street legal dune buggy would make a nice toad.

Each state is different, some states do not allow double trailers of any kind! Other states have max allowable lengths, some are 95', others are shorter. And no, you can not back up a rig like this, to many pivot points. I have many years of MH experience and would not tow two trailers, don't think it is safe in any respect. Just my humble opinion.

We saw several 5th wheel/pickup rigs pulling boats idown the interstate in South Dakota this summer. I would guess most of them were exceeding the weight limit on their pickup. It's fine until it isn't!

If interested in extremes, do a search for images of "Road Trains" used in Australia to move product to and from the Outback. Being flat and open must help.

It's amazing to me that they use them both on paved and dirt roads at lengths we would never consider safe enough.

Video showing them in action makes it look easy.

On I70 between KC and St. Louis it is NOT unusual to see a rig pulling 3 trailers...it is a straight shot.

In most states it depends on how they are hitches. A plate (fifth wheel) hitch with a ball mount pulling a second trailer would probably be legal in most states up to a certain length. However, two ball mounts in a row like what seems to be pictured in original OP would most likely be illegal in most states.

I have no idea what hitch setup is used on the triple trailers we have seen on I70..even going west towards Colorado...never looked at the hitches...just look in awe as we pass them !!
and...even though we travel I70 in both directions often...seeing the triple trailers is not every trip !!

Most states have a less than 65 feet rule.

As others have said, a lot depends on the state. Some states do not allow double pulls, period. States that do allow doubled have max overall length limits. There are several websites that show what types of pulls are allowed and to be on the safe side I would check first. It would be REALLY bad to get stopped halfway thru a state and have to unhook one trailer and leave it, not to mention the ticket!!! Better to check first!
