No braking system on a toad is called stupid and asking for trouble. A person might get away with it forever, but the one time is the time you might get bit hard! We had a 40 ft DP and pulled a 4dr Wrangler, had a Brake Buddy, went to stop and could feel the Jeep pushing me, blown fuse in Brake Buddy. If it had been an emergency stop I would have been in trouble due to increased stopping distance. I believe in luck and don't believe in pushing it!!!

Patriot brake here. Love it! Can see what's happening on the dash remote. Can Also hand brake the toad individually like electric trailer brake.

Same. I've only used mine on one trip (about 30 installs/stows) and it worked great. Once you "get it", takes under three minutes to install and test, and less than a minute to stow. Agree that the remote in the RV gives excellent feedback and I like that you can adjust the intensity from the RV to find just what suits you. Got mine for 999 at an Escapees Rendezvous.

He too thought that the weight and size of his RV could overcome the weight of the jeep. He discovered its the brakes that do the overcoming.

Diesel pusher (I think). Diesel engine in the rear of the coach.

Most states do require an active braking system on the toad. If you are ever in any kind of accident, and you do not have an active braking system, you basically are screwed!!!!! Not only are you on the hook for fines for not having it, but in all likelihood your insurance company will deny any claim since you were not legal.

No supplemental braking system is what my Dad would have referred to as "stepping over $5 bills to pickup nickels". After my AutoStop malfunctioned, we installed a BrakeBuddy. Love the little tug I feel with a quick stop or down a steep mountain road. WOULD NOT BE WITHOUT IT.

It has taken me a few months but now ready to set up the Kia Soul as our "Toad" with a supplemental breaking system. Now, any suggestions as to the websites with the best prices? I'm going to need the works: baseplate, the towbar, Invisi-brake and odds and ends.

Legalities aside: you only have to encounter one "pucker-butt" stopping episode to realize how good of an idea; a braking system on a Toad is...

I think etrailer.com is very competitive.

What is the safest way to tow a small Jeep? Would it be a drawbar or a dolly? And if you pull with a drawbar how do you make the brakes work?

Both are safe as pulling any trailer. It's all about which you are most comfortable with and the convenience.
I prefer towbar and electric braking system. Can hook unhook in less than 10 minutes.

Blackjeepk x2. Hooking and unhooking very simple with the toad. Think about where you're gonna store the dolly when you are using it. Also, what happens when you run down a rabbit hole i.e. you wind up in a cul-de-sac where you cannot turn around without dropping the toad or into a service station where you cannot make the turn. Doesn't happen very often but when it does, you must unhook the toad then park the toad, turn the coach around and then reconnect. I maybe the only driver this has happened to but when it does I couldn't imagine having a toad on a dolly.

Just our 2 cents.

Dolly is easy to store, just back over it so the rear overhang covers about 80% of it.

Admittedly I could have backed up a little more in this pic.

As for getting stuck somewhere that we had to back up at..hasn't happened (granted with our 25ft Axis we can easily navigate a cul-de-sac pulling the car--in fact we often do since our house is off of one! LOL

The green in the foreground is part of the circle of the cul-de-sac).

Well you are not the only person that has done that. I use a tow dolly because I purchased a toad that only allowed for that type of towing. After a long day of driving, I pulled into a gas station in WV that was connected to a motel right behind it. After gassing up I pulled forward to travel around the station and go through the motel parking lot. Lo and behold, the motel was out of business and the back of the station was fenced off. Tried making a u turn but there wasn't quite enough room. I did succeed in basically jack-knifing the MH and trailer without having an option to back up. Had to unload toad, unhook the dolly, maneuver the MH between cars, ice machines, etc and then hook everything back. Really wished at that moment I had made a different decision about towing methods. Only has to happen once before you become more diligent about where you pull into.
