Have towed a couple of Subarus, the latest is a 2010. Only the standard shift can be towed 4 down.

We were flat towing a 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. However, we traded that for a 2015 Jeep Renegade last year which has to be dolly towed. Still looking for a dolly, we haven't towed her yet.

We also traded the Sunflyer for a new Hurricane so that also changes the game.

Got a chance to try pulling the C-Max for a bit (4 miles). Not bad; handles about the same as the Escape does:

Will pull it a bit further tomorrow (~100 miles).

So my question is..... if i take one major trip a year for less than a month, is towing 4down financially reasonable compared to renting a tow dolly. I do have a towable car but baseplate isn't installed. We do tend to keep cars a while.....

Bill,

When you grind out the numbers let me know. My Kia Soul is flat towable, but i have not yet made the baseplate modification.

Dolly Rental is $58 a day.... one month would pay for flat towing setup.
That was easy.
I guess an option would be to find a used one....I'd rather not have to manhandle a dolly at every stop....flat towing is the plan for me.

Bill,

It takes some looking but the 6 speed manual transmission Kia Soul is Flat Towable. After looking around a bit this past February I got a 2016 base model, 10yr 100,000 warranty for $13.5K out the door - no trade-in. That should last a while.

Sounds like a great deal! We got a used 2014 elantra sport w the 6 spd...repossessed with 20k miles $13.5 ...loaded. we have to gas up twice as often as our old Prius, but it's a great car. I'm pretty sure they are identical twins with some Kia, since both are made by Hyundai.

Yes you can, as long as the front wheels are on a dolly. the ACME tow dolly works very well, only thing I did for more clearance was add 2x10 boards where the front wheels rest on dolly so the front clip will not hit any thing in tow.

The Ford C-Max (both the hybrid and Energi) are flat towable and there are some great incentives for them right now--if you want to buy new.

If you were looking for a Prius you may be surprised to find the C-Max quite comparable. (Yeah ok I've got family that works for Ford so I'm only moderately biased LOL.)

I tow 2014 Honda CRV, 2002 Dodge Dakota, and will be setting up 1995 Jeep Wrangler.
The CRV is lite but not as easy as the truck.
It is nice to be able to throw the bikes and stuff in the truck bed.

Cherokees must have the Active 2 system to be flat towed.

2016 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, one towed it once but it went well. Use a Roadmaster Falcon Two All Terrain Tow bar.
