Cool Smell of burned rubber after towing Jeep

Has anyone also experienced this? I thought it may be my brakes or something. I googled this and many state its the result of debris and such that collects underneath while flat towing. Normally the engine must burn off the road waste however when flat towing you get this smell. It goes away quickly.

Every time. It's just the minute rubber junk that kicks up off the road while towing. First time I smelled it I also nearly panicked.

I towed for years, and never had that. I would be concerned about things like, an oil leak, or an overheating transmission. I do not think the smell of burning rubber is a normal part of towing.

Depending on what type of braking system you have it may also be your tires. If your braking system is adjustable for sensitivity and force it could be set to high, I had this problem when using a Brake Buddy system on my Jeep. After proper adjustment I still had a rubber smell after a long tow just as bandoor stated, turned out it was just like he said, rubber from the road.

I should also point out that the smell dissipates very quickly, within 5-10 minutes normally.

The rubber accumulates on the exhaust system, after a long tow the smell can be pretty strong for s few minutes. Doesn't hurt anything, just stinks!

Seems to just be sticking underneath, like on the exhaust and so forth. As I said, it has always gone away quickly.

Thanks. I missed the word "after" in thread title. Makes sense now.

I am having trouble figuring out why towing a jeep would have any effect on rubber debris burning on the Motorhome's exhaust. Please tell me what I am misunderstanding.

I was reading/assuming the smell comes when driving the Jeep after it was towed... The build-up on its exhaust.

My Wrangler sits higher than many toads, may account for catching more 'stuff' underneath while towing, though I haven't experienced this even after 5 separate 1000+ mile tows.

Make sure you are putting the transfer case in neutral versus 4WD High.

Yep, we tow an hyundai elantra and we get the same smell. It freaked us out the first time too. It goes away after driving for a bit. It was worse on our trip over the summer than on our trip to Florida over Christmas break. It would be interesting to note if some vehicles are more or less prone to this than others. I'm betting that road conditions such as temperature and wet vs dry have an impact on the degree to which we experience this.

You are absolutely correct, type of vehicle, road conditions, weather, all make a difference. Our Jeep did it most of the time but not all of the time.
