How much Security Do You Need...

...to feel comfortable?

When we were towing snowmobiles, ATVs, Dirt Bikes, and other toys: we just hooked-up, tied-down, and took off!
Now: the Missus is wondering if we should actually spend about thirty bucks () in hitch and receiver locks...

What do you guys do?

Your Mrs. Is very wise a small amount to pay for security I also add battery operated sensors to my items that way they shrill like a smoke detector if touched. I would think your brand new kangaroo AND trailer would be a sought after item for theft in areas of the country.

Agree. I use keyed alike locks on all of my towed items. And when I have my mopeds on the cargo rack they also are chained to it. It might not stop a determined thief but it certainly doesn’t hurt anything. I saw a video of thieves stealing boats and RVs at rest stops and it was amazing. Less than 30 seconds and it was gone.

Speaking of security, here’s a true story about a trailer security.

Several years ago enroute to MotorTrike in Troup TX I stopped to pick up a 6X10 trailer from my BIL. (I was going down to pick up my new Honda Shadow trike at the factory.) Heck of a deal – invoice cost.

As we were hooking up the trailer my BIL related a conversation he had with my baby sister the previous day. It went like this:

SIS: What if he has a flat tire?
BIL: Okay, I’ll give him a new spare.
SIS: Won’t that tire get in the way of the trike he’s buying?
BIL: Okay, I’ll wield him a spare mount.
SIS: Shouldn’t there be a lock to keep someone from stealing the spare?
BIL: I’ll wield a bail and hasp on it and before you ask I’ll give him a heavy duty lock!

While BIL and I were finishing hooking up the trailer, guess who shows up with a question. Yep, my sister.

SIS: Someone could steal the trailer and trike. Shouldn’t he have a lock on the tongue?
BIL: Yes, I’ll give him a damn tongue lock! (BIL was starting to get irate. I would too since he was now out of his normal profit - $350.00 – from sale of the trailer plus another $200.00 for tire, mount, locks, and labor.)

I get the motorcycle and the next day I stopped at a BBQ joint on TX/LA border. Coming out I was admiring my new trike. Then I noticed the tongue lock wasn’t going to prevent any possible theft. And, I just started laughing. The hitch ball was not locked to the receiver.

I stopped to see BIL and sister on the way back to NC as they wanted to see my new trike and give me a "Katrina Damage Tour" of Gulf Coast MS. I pulled BIL to the side, out of ear range of my sister, and told him about the hitch. Told BIL I stopped on the road and picked up a lock for the hitch.

BIL laughed and laughed. Sister wanted to know what was so funny. BIL just waved her off. 10 years later BIL and I still get a chuckle out of sister’s security concern.

I do lock all trailers to the hitch and the hitch to the receiver. Ditto for a bike carrier on the GIF’s car.

I agree, lock everything up. Keeps honest people honest and makes it harder for the rest. A couple years ago we had a rash of empty boat trailers being stolen up at the lake. Just unhooked from the tow rig and gone.

Cool

Reminds me of an old poem I used to recite when giving home security presentations...

If you stick a stock of liquor in your locker,
It's slick to stick a lock upon your stock,
Or some stickler who is slicker
Will stick you of your liquor
If you fail to lock your liquor
With a lock!

I lock my motorcycle up. I'm in or around my RV a good percentage of the time. I thought about investing in a security video system. Maybe in the future. Honestly, I've never had a problem.

Here's my security concern. You are boondocking on Forest Service or BLM land. You take the toad to town/sightsee etc. While you are away, how do you guys and gals keep the MH secure from potential miscreants? This one is the DW's biggest issue with boondocking. Don't get me wrong here I get her concerns. Thoughts peeps?

Nah......I don't think you need to shuck up all that money for locks & stuff.
Just give me your address and I'll make sure nothing happens to your stuff.

How many crooks wander off into the sticks?
The crooks are usually in town.

Lots of thieves and miscreants out in the sticks. Think crack cookers. Their customers come to see them, too. You never know where you will find people who would rather take your stuff than work for their own.

Anyone traveling is a target. POS's look for you, watch what you do and act accordingly. Road-side "scenic views" are hot spots for them. Most people just get out of their vehicles, walk a couple feet away and take pictures. They are watching you "not watch them". Rest areas, big box parking lots, live-in campgrounds and tourist "hot spots" are breading grounds for these scumbags. Lock everything the best you can...carry good insurance...enjoy the ride. If it starts getting you paranoid, you need to take a break from it. Most important is your life. Be prepared to defend it at 7 and 12 yards.

Just because you're paranoid: it doesn't mean that they're NOT out to get you!

Tonight being Friday night grab some popcorn and watch the 1967 version movie "In Cold Blood". At least carry a can of Bear Spray for personal protection in MH.

Wow. What a paranoid group of old farts.
You sound like a bunch of scared kids. How stressful being on the road must be for you.....everyone is a potential thug after your crap.

Have you considered maybe camping in more upscale places?
Quit hanging around in the alley with the scumbags.

I've been camping on and along these highways & back roads for 50+ years and have never witnessed much more than minor bs....hardly what I'd consider crimes against man.

Certainly I've not seen anything like the kinds of crime I grew up with in the inner city.

And in my experience, if you're street savvy and you don't stick your opinions where they aren't wanted, you rarely find yourself in these situations anyway.

When you pull your head out of your ass, be sure and spit before you swallow...otherwise, you're breath will smell like your attitude. I'll pass on to you my Grandfather's favorite advice many moons ago..."You got a lot of growing up to do!!"
